Rabbits thumping

Now then fellas, was out at one of my new permissions last night (picture of bag posted in sporting pictures).

I nailed a few bunnies whilst it was still light, then switched to the lamp as it got dark.

While I was laying nearby a large warren, I could hear them 'thumping' every now and again, i've had a look in Mr Darlings book and another more recent one but theres no mention of it. Are they using the sound to communicate? or is that just in bambi?

I think they use it as a warning signal.

Rabbits have sensetive feet and can pick up vibrations in the ground. Another reason to tread carefuly when stalking!

They do it to aleart the others of danger usually 2 sharp thumps

Cheers guys, I think i may have been holed up a little too close to one of the burrows and hence perhaps my scent got wafted down into it as i was laying still for a loooong time - doh! it's all experiance though eh

My little dutch stamps when he doesn't get his own way, or when he doesn't like something. I am not sure wild rabbits do that, they might but I have never seen them do it

It is a warning signal as is resonates through the warren beneath/around them...same as you would bang on the floor if upstairs and you wanted another fried egg with your breakfast in bed!!

I've seen it done. It's one of their methods of warning their mates that you're there. Better luck next time

No, it wasnt that i didnt believe you, it was so loud i thought perhaps it was a deer or somethiing, too loud for a wittle fwuffy bunny!!!

I have heard that thumping sound when i walked past a couple of burrows the other evening i didnt have a clue what they were at It is quite loud as well
