subsonicnat
The way the insurance companys behave. Does it mean by their thinking that having car insurance is no garuntee of them having to pay out. If that is the way they are always wriggling not to lay blame in any direction, perhaps the insurance even if checked by police, is not worth the paper its written on.. None of them want to pay up....

al4x
Don't worry about the tow bar as a modification I've never heard of one being declared. If you read your insurance policy it usually mentions towing as something you can do. As this is a non fault claim you will get the damage to the caravan and car paid for. However if it was your fault your cover wouldn't usually cover the caravan
rodp
Towbar isn't a modification, it's an approved accessory. Big difference. In your handbook there should be an article on nose weight and maximum weight towed, this proves you haven't modified the vehicle, you've just fitted a manufacturers approved accessory. Get on to the ombudsman and tell them the insurance of the vehicle that ran in to you is being awkward.. It's that insurances problem to claim from the one behind, not yours. HDAV
Does it state on your licence that you can tow.if getting on in age there are no restrictions but a lot of younger drives have to take a test to tow anything. If that is the case you're insurance want pay out. Everyone with a full car licence can tow, it's just how heavy the trailer you can tow that's limited and it gets very complex working it out..... Vince Green
Insurance companies do treat towbars as a modification now, you have to declare it and it has to be a manufacturer's approved towbar not an aftermarket job you bought off ebay. The key point in this story is that the driver who ran into the OP is using a claims management company, many of whom are out and out crooks and will do and say anything to get out of paying
