A close encounter...of the ginger kind Qu

Just over a week ago when I shot 3 dog foxes I also saw another fox so new at least one was left on the one farm. This was confirmed when I was crow shooting on the weekend as the area around the yard stank of fox.

As we are often creatures of habit I generally follow the same route around the far, but opted for a change last night. I arrived at 8.30 with the trusty cannon (Howa 1500 in .243 (varmint, laminate thumbhole) topped of with the N750A and set off on my merry way. The fog was just starting to roll in, and combined with a full moon it was a little brighter then I would have liked, so I wasnt hopeful.

I made my way to a likely spot on top of a bank that looks over a few fields and set the trusted mark one hand caller off. Quick scan with the torch and a nice pair of foxy eyes at 60 yards. Over to the NV to see Mr fox happily tearing the back end out of a recently deceased ewe. 75 grain sst on its way. Hit him square in the chest with a loud thud that echoed up the valley. Just as the area quietened down I heard 2 foxes calling about half a mile away. Another quick call and a fox popped out of a small wood about 40 yards away...no safe shot...off he went. Called a bit more and another set of eyes appeared in the wood (probably the same fox). I watched him/ her for about 5 minutes sat/ lying the other side of a fence. I could clearly see the mesh and could have taken the shot...but no safe backstop and the fox just didnt want to come through. I watched for another couple of minutes to see a second fox walk past the first one and then do virtually the same for a couple of minutes before disappearing. I really dont know where they all come from.

Change of tactic...quick walk over to the other side of the wood and set up on a fence post. Only issue was that I was a lot closer then I would have liked. I was pretty sure I knew where the fox would come from so quick squeak and over to the NV. 10 seconds and up comes the fox...same old story..sat behind the fence with no safe shot.......One last squeak and through the fence he comes, safe shot presented itself and down he went to a neck shot at about 30 yards. Looks like I still have some work to do with at least another 3 foxes in the area.

Both foxes were dogs and both in great condition
