Good evening guys and gals, got my new browning a bolt today and decided to zero in this afternoon once the weather cleared up. Using Winchester super X 80 grain bullets. They went everywhere in about a 6 inch area!! Is it me, the bullets or the gun! I am a keeper so not being big headed or nothing but the scope is not moving etc. Scope is a new nikko Stirling diamond 3-12x56. Any advise great. Thanks

Well either your rifle doesn't like the ammo or your barrel needs some shooting in. (or both) You don't say what calibre it is either

First thing is some serious copper remover* down that barrel on a regular basis, and some different ammo, get some PPU for cheapness and the lightest bullets for that calibre you can find.

* Forrest Bore Foam is good

80 should be fine so wouldn't worry about the weight, when I got mine I was told shoot one, clean bore with patches, shoot one then clean, 6 shots like that, then bore cleaner etc then 6 more. Bore cleaner again, and you should notice the group closing in a bit by then. By about 12-15 mine was down to about 1" at 100 yards, good enough for a fox or muntie! It was good for 1/2" at 100 yards in the end, more accurate than me!!!

My rifle was a Howa by the way but was told all new rifles will need settling in.

Ok thanks, I had 25 shots and yes it was better than when I started but the "group" was still about 3.5 inch. I've got 20 more of the bullets I've been using so will see how they go.

could well be that your rifle just doesn't like the bullets you using.when shooting in a new rifle I always buy a good selection of different makes ,weight and type,to try out..usually find one or two makes shoot like a shotgun pattern.but always find a make that shoots best..i usually put 20-30 rounds of cheap ammo through a new barrel before I would worry about good grouping...

Ok thanks, I've put 25 throu it and will get proper padded out on top of the Land Rover tomorrow so I can eliminate any movement from me and then see what happens, I will go shop and get some heavyier and lighter grain bullets and see what happens. Will give you all an update, to be honest it did look like I had shot the target board with a shotgun shell of SSGs today! Please keep the posts coming!! Thanks again!!

make sure you give the barrel a good clean between each type of bullets.also don't shoot more than 3 or 4 rounds between letting it cool down

Try another bullet if it's a new rifle your past shooting it in properly but give it a good clean either way now with a proper rod etc.

If the change in bullet doesn't sort it you need to start looking at other potential issues do it systematically one by one. Start at the mount then scope the bedding and action screw then barrel.

If your not a great shot own up and let someone else try who is could safe you loads of ammo!

Thanks guys will get time after feeding tomorrow. I'm not the best shot in the world but I am a keeper so I can shoot a gun. I will shoot 3 bullets of each sort clean then give it a min to cool then next 3 and so on and so on. Will post tomorrow evening how I get on. Cheers

Well guys I have found a bullet it likes!! Federal 100 grain was the clear winner out of the selection I bought, second came Norma 58 grain then Norma 75 grain and in last place was the Winchester 80 grain. At 130 yards got 3 in an inch circle with the federal so that should do well for a roe doe or red hind this evening if the fog clears!! Thanks for all the advise and help over the last few days!!
