I only saw the news briefly so I googled and found that article.

norfolk dumpling
These things take a while to come to court etc - the Norfolk gunsmith who is up on 20+ charges (falsifying docs, supply of illegal guns) is in court later this month and he was originally investigated/charged 12 months ago. Westward
The "firearms expert and former officer" quoted at the time, seemed to have the opinion that handling loaded firearms with the safety off whilst around children was not a failure of basic safety procedures. Hopefully this was just his view or perhaps he was misquoted. We can but hope that current firearms officers are properly trained and tested in safe handling of firearms. Rewulf
First thing I was ever taught about guns, and the first thing I teach novices now about guns is,unless you are at a firing point and about to discharge the firearm, the gun should be 'cleared ' ie mag out, breach open ,with shotguns ,barrels broke or breach open and visibly so for a semi auto. Safety catch engaged if available. The very few firearms that do not have the ability to lock open the breach must be cleared and made safe as best as possible at end of use and hand over. Pretty certain a G36 has a hold open to keep the breach clear, and this is how the firearm should have been exhibited in this case. If he had cleared it ,it would have ejected the cartridge (which shouldnt have been there anyway) Frankly ,to show a locked and loaded firearm to a class of children, and allegedly asking if they wanted to hold it is unforgivable. Apparently the officer involved has been taken off firearms duties. Good,if he cant do basic gun safety , I wouldnt like to see how he is in a real situation.
