Dibs85
I'm piggy backing of a idea from another post but I'm thinking of getting a synthetic semi for bashing rabbits when it's raining something that will take our glorious weather! Is this a good idea if so what are some suggestions. I don't want to spend a fortune and I'm not looking to look like an extra from call of duty! Just something cheap and robust enough to do the job in the rain and take a beating!
MG6065
I'm interested to see the replies to this. I have a cz452 style in 22lr that I've been using for lamping and day time shooting but been thinking for a while of getting a semi auto, particularly for lamping. Not sure what to do, whether to get rid of the bolt action or to get a variation and get a second 22lr. The 452 is awesome for day time but I think I semi auto would be awesome for lamping when multiple shots in quick succession is needed. old man
From MHE, reliability of the cycling has always been the issue with semi autos, some are pulled off target line by the inertia of the action involved? As said my experience only.
Bewsher500
no semi is as accurate as a comparable BA much more to go wrong get clogged and jam number of FTF increases as a result, lost many a rabbit from the dreaded "click" I shoot a browning bottom eject stock loaded semi which is fun but if I am going out seriously I take a short placcy sako quad shoots out to 100+ with ease the browning groups are double the size recoil of the action is no different to cycling a bolt for being taken of target (arguably less so) horses for courses
mickmep
personally would put in a variation and keep your bolt action as well. semi auto's can be a real pain when using in the dark if they're not working well.
Dibs85
Are there any recommendations for a synthetic bolt action that will do what I need or should I buy a second hand one and not worry about mucking it up?
Dibs85
I am used to oiling polishing licking etc and general tlc of all my rifles I have only had wood stocks due to personal prefence and take bloody good care of them. But I reckon even a wood stock bolt action would take some beating as long as the inside of barrel and action are OK who cares about cosmetics. Maybe I should buy s/h cz and stop being as fussy with it as the others! Opinions?
bang bang birdy
I did what you want to do. I got a semi auto, but was not happy with the accuracy or the reliability. I soon sold it. It was a fun gun to shoot at tin cans. But not a gun you could trust to perform. Glad I kept the cz452.

rangey
wouldn't be without a 10/22 in the cabinet.no problem with reliability if you keep the action clean.accuracy is 1/4 difference to my 452 and that's from a 12" barrel..makes no difference at head shot rabbits, they all roll over.if ive got a lot of rabbits to clear up I always use the 10/22... kennett
I had 10/22 and shot a LOT of rabbits with it (1500) in 8/9 months. But as said they just aren't as reliable or accurate as a bolt, which is fine when they are sitting at 30yds but they soon get Wise and you have to start pushing the range a bit. As for reliability, a couple of hundred shots a night soon gums them up, and lamping on a dusty stubble or drilling just makes it even worse. kenj
My first rimfire was a Magtech 7022 semi auto, which I still own, using it regularly. It has a synthetic stock, just needing a wipe over after shooting. Using Eley subs, then RWS, it has proved a reliable tool for pest control, while weighing under 5 lbs with scope and moderator, it comes up to the eye with ease, being a joy to use. The rifle was just over £100 when I bought it new, which would be the second hand price today. Now sold under the Mossberg banner as the 702 Plinkster, the price is higher relatively, than the Magtech. In the US I used a Ruger10/22, another lightweight rifle, although recycling was a big problem using Federal ammo. This is just one of my recent blogs using the Magtech to control rabbits. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/pest-control-magtech-22-semi-auto-makes-up-for-lost-time/
