Thanks Jason By 12, i was handling a 12b, so unless if very small stature, I would ignore 410. A 6lb to 6 1/2 lightweight 12b or 5 1/2 to 6lb 20b,both with light loads (28g or less) will last him a fair while but what is main use of gun? 12b is has advantage for wildfowling (steel shot) and clays (competition) but for other uses, either would be suitable. Yildiz, Lincoln, Khan(Revo) (new) and Franchi (secondhand) all have suitable guns (28 mulichoke. 3 inch. OU) in £500 bracket.
