17. Remington differences

Is the 17remington and 17 remington fireball the same thing and am i right in thinking its a necked down .222 remington case, just asking as ive heard both frases used and no matter which you put into Wikipedia it says the parent case is a 222 magnum which looks a hafty case

IIRC the fireball case although using the same head as the 222 family I think it is a one on its own due to its short length. Originally designed for the Remington xp pistol.

See wiki says the parent case for the 221 is the 222 i was thinking it was a straigh forward necked down case, i suppose ultimately i want to know can you get to one of the calibers by incrementally necking down a .222 or is it not as simple as that

You can convert 222 or 223 brass down to 221 or 17 fireball/Mach IV. You need a couple dies and time/patience. You have to Rick down in a couple steps as you are eventually ending up with the main are walls as your new neck. You will have to neck ream and trim to length twice I think.

 

Given that hassle, I would get a custom 17-222 no turn chamber and use 222 brass or just get the 17 rem to start with.
