pin
Out after bugsy the other night and I was getting eaten alive by midges Never used to bother me but each bite has come up nastily and it's bloody annoying. Anyone know of a spray or whatever that keeps them off?
Cranfield
The very best, "anti any insect that bites" preparation is Avon Skin So Soft. It is not intended for that purpose , but I was given the tip off from fishing/hunting friends in the US about 15 years ago and its the best thing I have ever used. Its fame spread to the UK some time ago. Google "Avon Skin So Soft" and see what I mean.
pin
Interesting, there is an article there saying 45 Commando based in Arbroath use it, even a quote from the stores sergeant saying "its good kit". Looks like avon have noticed and started branding it "bug guard" in the states. Do you know which one it is I should buy, there are 45 products in the "skin so soft" range
Dr W
Are you sure this isn't just an excuse to use skin cream for your delicate body? Jungle formular is good but I did find a product in Australia that was amazing but to be honest you need it over there as everything wants to have a piece of you. Dunkield
Pin, I worked in Lybia for a couple of years and we used to get swarmed by them, I used to bath in liquid stuff (diluted of course) and that worked really well. The only trouble is the bath gets like an ice rink, so you have to let the missus know she needs to clean it more often
Hodmedod.one
But don't wear Avon Skin So Soft when Bear Hunting in case Bruin decides you smell so nice that you must be looking for some lurve

Mungler
Erm... this has all gone a bit Gaylordian. I find that Midges attack my finger nails. Does anyone have any tips on something to apply to my finger nails to make them stronger and midge resistant and which comes in a range of colours to match my shoes and handbag? Oly
Garlic works But if you don't want to offend everybody around you take garlic tablets, the garlic gently seeps out of your pores - enough for the midges/mosquitoes to stay away but not people! Ewich
Avon Skin-so-soft works (need to be the stuff in the green container) and no this is not a wind-up but the one i use is Mosi-guard natural.

I live in midge country I've tried the Avon stuff, sat out in the evening doing a bit of work with timber right along side a wood. It works very very very (did I mention very?) well I have a bottle of it in the car but that's gone in for a service at the moment If you do a PW search on Avon skin so soft it's been covered here a lot, there are also pictures of the correct bottle. If it'd keep the ******* away I'd paint my nails and apply glitter too, 'orrible little ^£%*^$£'s
Dr W
Notice to mods. I think some people would like PW to have a fashion, hair and beauty section
pin
Reading the old threads it seems they changed it slightly (the look and the name) but the stuff is the same. Search for "fresh" and it brings up "Skin-So-Soft Soft & Fresh Dry Oil Body Spray" which according to the threads and google, is the stuff to use. Only £1.50 a bottle too. Cranfield
I read somewhere (US fishing magazine, I think) that it was the citronella and one other ingredient in Skin So Soft, that made it so effective. As it has a light, almost neutral, smell, its not embarrassing for rough, tough, lumberrjack types like me to wear it.
