Girlfriend inconsiderately took her 4x4 out tonight and left me twiddling my thumbs. I knew I wanted to go and tryout the new fox smashers I'd made and until now used for dissecting crows, so walking it was. Myself, one of mothers foster beasts and his mate set off about 8 for a wander. Saw a few hares but it was so still and clear I wasn't hopeful of anything too much. I knew there was foxes about, I'd been and checked a few places earlier in the week and there was fox padding. Down by the river where we can't get in the truck because it's so wet I had a bit of a call, there's a monster place with holes washed out by the river that you could drop a car into and not get it out, it's quite often full of badgers but last year a vixen reared a litter of Cubs in there. Anyway squeaking away doing an Oscar winning performance of a dying rabbit and I spy some eyes two fields over so sneak over to the hedge for a look all excited only for it to turn out to be billy badger doing a little jig in the lamp. Stand up, shine around and bang there's a fox back where we'd just been. Sneak back quickly because I'm pretty sure it's the lamp shy vixen that's been around for a few years. Lay down, on with the lamp and bang! Good night Vienna. Little bit high as she was 65/70yds away but an invisible entry hole and an exit wound the size of your fist. That'll do I think. Quick wander round to where 3 years ago I dug the biggest fox I've ever seen which is coincidentally behind the lambing fields. Again not hopeful because the farm yard is lit up like Xmas and there's tractors revving about and farm dogs yapping. Quick flick of the torch and there's Charles mooching around a pile of cleansing. He wasn't happy at being seen and I barely had time to give the lads the lamp and shoot him. Slightly back with my shot and it came out through his flank, bowled him over and he was obviously stuffed but not 100% dead. He crawled 10 yards and lay down dead. Wandered back through the farm to see the very pleased farmer!

To be fair it wouldn't have got down the one track to the river ground. A farmerly dispute lead to one farmer power harrowing the track to level it and the other decided to go and dig the ditch out the next day to spite him! This Friday I'll go to another farm who's just started lambing 1500 sheep so there might be a few around the yard.
