Old cartridges

Recommended Posts

There are some real oldies in there. Most to all of them will still go bang and do the job that they were designed to do. But once they're gone they're gone. No doubt there are collectors on here. I would think that a complete box of war ag carts still in the box is a bit rare.

Sadly whats in the box is a mixture of old eley carts and not the originals for the box.

Still, you can't exactly find the box anywhere anymore. I know a bloke that has all sorts of stuff like this but it either comes down to shoot them or make up a display for them. They came from an era when most carts were 1-1/16th or 1-1/8th >> 30 /32 gram with short brass and larger shot sizes. #5 was pretty standard. Rat to an elephant.. AND the old boys still knocked down the birds with fixed chokes and side by sides with double triggers. If my grand fathers and my fathers guns were anything to go by they didn't have much choke at all and they were so worn that they used a few Rizzlas in between the barrel flats and the breech flats to take out the headache. They never cleaned the guns and just brought them in from the cold into the kitchen and propped them up in the corner. That where the guns lived all of the time. No security at all.

There was nothing special about any of these cartridges from a shooting or manufacturing point of view. If you put in a big enough order you could have what you want printed on the case. Most of these were made by Eley or Hull and were no different to the Grand Prix or Three Crowns. It would be no different to you taking a few cartridges of what you use now and putting them away for 30 or 40 years and thinking that they are something special. I've got a quantity of old cartridges of various types which have just ended up in a random box but I either use them for the purpose that they were made for or leave them to get even older and more dusty. If I had a few which were a bit different I'd rather cut one open to show and measure the contents and shoot one over a chronograph and pattern plate to see and record How they performed. At least they would have served their purpose. It's a bit like the people who have a hand made gun built for them and they put it away and never use it because it might get marked or dirty.
