3 INCH 28 BORE AND NON TOX.

Recommended Posts

Mossberg pushed the boat out with the 12bore 3.5 inch with federal backing the first ammo. Benelli have done the same with the 28 bore 3 inch with Fiocchi making the ammo.

It wont be of much use to some shooters, but to those with 28 bores who want to use non tox loads the extra capacity will come in usefull.

With steel its obviously going to give the biggest boost 19 gram being about it in the 70mm 28 bore 15 sixtenths with the 3 inch. its giving more scope of loads for an ever growing fan base to use in the 28 bores.

I am no 28 bore user, but for you that do use them is this development of much interest to you all, or is it as many feel about the 3.5 inch 12 a waste of space. ?

AFAIK Benelli launched the first 3 inch 28 bore in the new year, it was backed by Fiocchi in that they were the first to probuce ammo for the 28 3 inch. I dont know about years i dont think it will be long before other companys folow suit myself

It will most probably be the manufacturers will sell all 28s with 3 inch chambers as kind of standard, most guns are 3 inch these days.

In fact in new OUs i dare say there are many more in three inch than 70mm. I am guessing the 28 will folow this trend.

This is American manumitus gone mad again. The downside of having a longer and longer and heavier shot load is that pressures go way up and shot deformation gets more, patterns aren't as good and guns have to get heavier to absorb the recoil. so the end game is a 410 with a four foot long cartridge with a pound of buckshot being fired at supersonic speed out of a gun like a punt gun with a pattern like a holey string vest. Most shooters cant connect with what is available now. And how much a box is this lead going to be? 28 bore cartridges are pricey enough as a standard. Still some people went out and bought the 223 and 243 short magnums and I hear that they are on the way out after just a couple of years. The general public are a strange breed.

Bit of hyperbole you think? We have a 3" 20 ga and a 3" 410. The 3" 28 will slot just between them. It won't change the world but for those that like a 28 as their go to gun but hunt areas that require non tox of whatever reason, these guys have an option. It isn't a big group and not a group for the UK but is a group nonetheless less.

It mainly aimed at steel use, the deformation is not an issue.

Yes I understand that but it is still a case of what the American idea is. It is a case of trying to get a tool to do a job It wasn't designed to do and because I can I'm going to. "It's my right". This doesn't alter the fact that you can use either a JCB or a Formula one go shopping at Tesco but that ain't the job that they were designed for.

It might be needed if a lead ban is imposed either the reloader or cartridge firms will be glad of or need the extra space.

It's certainly an interesting concept, unless a complete lead ban comes into place I would perhaps expect it to fizzle out due to lack of availability?

I was pondering a 28 bore and I'd certainly try a 3" gun. Especially as the girlfriend has taken a liking to my 20 bore!

It,s not only pressures that go up, so do prices! Another way of getting more profit out of shooters? Will the extra shot result in more kills? Doubtful. Maybe it,s just a case of "I,ve got a bigger one than you"??
