plasma v lcd

Basically I made this choice a few months ago.

Plasma are better from viewing angle point of view, they are wider.

They come larger for cheaper and go larger than LCD. I'm told that plasmas are heavier too. Though the big negative is lifespan. When they get old they start burning out cells leaving black marks in the middle.

LCD are sharper in image and last longer. They are more expensive and don't go quite as big as plasmas. If they get damp then they are ruined but that goes for most electronic equipment.

We chose LCD and not had any problems. Both Samsungs.

p.s. Also forgot that plasmas seems to more energy intensive.

Hope this helps.

okay, plasma, same viewing angle as lcd (176/8 deg)

plasma lasts an average of 15,000 hours (or this is the number im given to quote) however it can be recharged.

LCD lasts on average 25,000 hours, however is not repairable to my knowledge

Burning occurs on plasmas when they are paused or you watch a channel with an emblem alot (skyone is fav)

Plasma are more expensive and are indeed heavier than LCD, however you should avoid if possible tilting plasma more than 15 deg in transport.

LCD goes up to about 42" (think the new sharp AQ goes to 46") if your going 42 or below go for LCD if you want a 50" go for plasma.

Plasma also has a better picture, shows subtle tones better and dosent blind you with contrast (what is percieved to be a clear picture)

good makes:

New samsung range (r88 range)

LG (value for money, replacing old line of tv's as we speak)

Sony (over priced but good)

Pioneer (over priced, but worth every penny, typically plasma tv's and not below 42")

Panasonic (new range out)

Toshiba (new range out)

Philips (ambi light is not all that, try and pick up a bargin old line TV or alternatively the new ones are out and are nicer tv's) However not a philips fan, they are built cheaply in my honest opinion.

if you want any advice on individual models give me a PM and if i have experiance with them i will try and help.

I may be wrong but isn't fixing a plasma screen tv expensive (like the replacement of the unit)?

If you watch tv 24 hours a day then a LCD can be expected to last 3 years but if you take the average of 6h 47m per day multiply it by 365days in a year you get 2190 hours, divide that by 25000 hours quoted and you can expect your TV to last 11.5 years where plasma may last: 6.8 years using same logic. Therefore you would need to repair your plasma 2 times before the LCD breaks at which time there will be newer and better things about.

it is i believe costly, however i think you will find plasma lasts 7 or 8 years and i cant remember the exact figure (and im nto at work so cant look it up) but this 'life' means the tv will still show a good picture at this point, its just that a certain number of pixels have died.

it is however this simple.

bellow 42" LCD

Above 42" Plasma

42" decide on individual tv's merits.

i would recomend 37" as being the best size, less imposing than 42" and considerably larger than 32" looks great. Samsung have just addopted this size for their new range and we are now out of stock in the S/E due to popularity. The previous model samsung (r73) was the most popular tv in the UK for the previous year and bit. Good sets, shame they dont do 1080P on the new range.

in some shops when viewing tv's on terestrial (spelt that wrong) they are using co-ax cables which were installed to the shop when it was built, this is the case with my shop and the true analouge signal is significantly superiour to that which you see in store. However LCD does have a habbit of pixilating it. But if your using Sky with a good signal (makes just as much difference as anything else) then you will never use the free view.

Non HD sky is 90% of HD sky, tbh i would save your money for now and wait for HD sky to come down in price, spend your money on quality scart or hdmi leads.

panasonic are very good, personally rate them higher than almost every other set (rents have one, 5 years of supurb picture and faultless reliability) however my one niggle against them would be the way you change source, its just a bit weird. Hard to explain, but have a look at one if you get the chance. Other than this its a great set, never seen it on HD. I know panasonic sometimes use an odd number of pixels and lines. But i dont think this set has this.

im out now getting very drunk and trying to forget this week, so will reply to any other Q's when i am sobar :good:

The pioneer with true HD source (TS off the net, Sky HD etc) is stunning. A few mates have very expensive LCD's and hate admitting plasma is better, but shown this they freely admit its better.

Even with a good up scaling DVD player and a well mastered DVD they rock :good:

They have to be going for a lot less than £2k now, has to be worth a look.

Plasma, plasma, plasma. My dad's a broadcasting engineer and I grew up being able to grade tv picture quality. LCD just doesn't cut it - anything fast moving gets delayed and the colours are totally untrue. I got myself a 42' Panasonic plasma and it just continues to amaze me. Its only on a couple of hours a day so not worried about the life.

Im going for A SAMSUNG LE40R74BDX tomorrow i think. i did want the 42" LG LCD unit but they are like rocking horse poo now.

go for the r88 its a step in the right direction and a better looking tv

the r74's are much harder to come by than the LG's

dont buy a display model.

(btw ghosting isnt an issue on lcd's any more they are much better now, its just the contrast is too high, so it ruins an otherwise good picture, but for under 42" you cant buy plasma, so its got to be lcd.)

I have a 42" Samsung plasma TV, I have had it now for almost two years and it's as good a the day I bought it. I think plasma's have a lot better pic quality and sharpness than the LCD's at the moment but things change technology wise very quik so who knows what they will come up with next :good:??
