Will I ever be able to Reload with out spilling everything

Recommended Posts

Every time I get my Mec 650 out to reload some off my 12g shells I always spill something. Be it lead shot or powder.

Im extra carefull but alway spill something usually lead shot and it gets everywhere.

Most of the time it happens because I cycle it and dont have a cartridge under the lead drop shoot. But last time I spilt it twice by tilting the bottles back with the filling cap off.

Its such a sinking feeling when you hear all the shot bouncing off the worktop like rain on a tin roof.

Am I the only person who struggles with this. I know im blonde but this is getting silly now.

Can't help you with the bottle tipping, think a lot of reloaders done that at times, plus powder in shot bottle and vice versa.

I found it was better to unlatch the indexing and push bar over and back manually, that way you have more control and it doesn't add much time to reloading.

Happy sweeping/weeping/swearing.

As said , been there done that. A sheet of 3mm ply with a piece of 1/2 inch edging trim around the side flat side in works great, same as baking sheet but you can make it a bit larger and it can be drilled and bolted down on the surface you have your machine fixed too. some thin felt glued on this ply also stops the pellets bouncing but is a bit of a nuisance with fine powder but at least it doesn't get in the carpet !!

I reload 410 and the powders ok but I load the shot individually by hand as the larger shot sizes do jam and then suddenly drop.

As has been said, a chunk of 3mm ply with something around the outside catches spillage. You can make it as big as you like, the larger it is the easier it gets to catch the shot. Putting a sheet of expanded polystyrene on the base will dampen any bounce. This was one of the first things I made when I got my MEC. Saves a lot of anglo saxon wafting around the house.

An added benefit is that it keeps all your reloading bits together. I weigh samples of components every so often and this keeps the scales neat and tidy too.
