Dekers
Children grow up very quickly, mine did before I knew it, and it is my biggest regret now not spending more time with them.

TaxiDriver
4 nights a week for 35 - 40k and you don't have to work weekends Your wife works part time as a Paramedic, so presumably not to shabby salary wise. Jeeeeez it must be hard. If you're working nights, presumably your kids are asleep the majority of time. If you work days, Are they likely to be at school the majority of time ? I think your right to be thinking about family time being more important, If you maybe give up on a holiday or trading up the car a year later or comfortably find ways to tighten your belts a little then why not. If you work a little less, could your wife maybe do a few more hours ?

team tractor
I work 8-5/6 mon -Friday but I then go back until 10/11 regularly and work Saturdays if I can. Those extra £300-500 a week sometimes in the business makes a massive difference . I have 3 kids to pay for and partner plus house. Life is short yes but your no good to your kids if your on the streets or struggling to pay for food. My dad worked all day and night when I was a kid and I struggle to remember him as a kid but he's my best mate now and we work together now. He made sure I had food, clothes and a roof over my head to which I respect him . My ex partner left because I'm never at home but she loved spending my money. My partner of 5 years now doesn't mind and works all she can. I'll add my house is only a 4 bed and my vw van is 4 years old now. I require nothing special in life. My last holiday was In a tent again as we love it. All I know is I'd rather have more money due in than out Also it's your life and only you know Edited August 9, 2016 by team tractor

If you work a little less, could your wife maybe do a few more hours ? actually I think you'd be suprised paramedics are not on that great money but yes you are right we are not struggling but I pay for swimming lessons for my children which are surprisingly expensive but I think one of the most important things to learn especially as we live in a village surrounded by two rivers and three lakes and neither of us drive a flash car (vectra and focus) one is 9 years old and one is 10 years old the problem is the nights I'm out all night and asleep all day in the week so I'm not there and it's affecting my marriage and I'm missing out on seeing my kids yes the money is good but working 12 hour nights and driving nearly an hour each way takes a lot out of you and I've already fallen asleep at the wheel on the motorway and crashed into the central barrier which was not fun at all. The money sounds a lot but where I live it doesn't go very far at all after the mortgage and diesel for work. So we do ok but are by no means we'll off Edited August 9, 2016 by mattyg1086
figgy
Only you can decide on what's best for you. I see it as my duty as father and husband to provide and if that meant working away or nights it's what I did. I still spent quality time with my children as when I had time off I could spend days with them. When working local I was out early and home not long before their bedtime. Offshore work is picking up again and you get six months off a year.
