Which set of 243 win dies

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have reloaded in the past with a Lee Loader (the old whack a mole hammer version) and today have bought a RCBS Rock chucker reloading kit!

Now obviously I need some dies to work with the press. I have read there are several different types that should all fit the thread.

I currently am using brass already fired in my rifle, so assume I'd be best with a set with seperate full sizing die and neck sizing die, alongside a bullet seater die if that's right ? Also some I have seen have a bullet crimp die ?

Just a bit confused as some kits I have seen only have 2 dies, then I've seen some with 3 and now googled the Lee ones and they have bloody 4 ?!

Any advice on which ones are good would be much appreciated, and also why there are different numbers in each set.

Thanks .

Lloyd

For most hunting you only need a two die set.

Ideally, you want rounds to chamber easily, so you'll want a full length sizing die plus seating die. You're not competition shooting, so you don't need a seating die with a micrometer adjustment.

You may also want a decapping die if you want to clean your cases before sizing them (recommended). This is to remove the spent primer.

Hornady, Redding make good reliable dies. I prefer the Hornady dies, they just look to be better engineered and with a better finish. I'm no expert on metals though.

You don't want, or need, to crimp. Crimping can raise pressure and is unnecessary in a bolt action rifle. Crimping is more necessary in semi auto or full auto rifles where recoil may unseat the bullet.

Looking at the set of Lee dies, has a full length die along side a neck only sizer I could change between.

I know I won't need the crimp die although the other 3 I would. Unless anyone can see a more appropriate set on Henry Krank ?

Also I was looking at their digital calipers for £20. There are some digital ones on Amazon but reviews aren't great so assuming these will be decent for the job at hand ?

Much appreciated lads :)

I can't see why you sold your other dies really but that is your choice.

A 2 die set will be good enough as mick says. I've never crimped and managed quite well fir long enough. Gave a look in machine mart for digital calipers. There reliable enough.

Was that meant for me Dougy ?

Apologies but I'm a bit confused. I've not sold any other dies ?
