walshie
I need some rods just for general maintenance jobs like trailers, gates, machinery etc. Is it 6011s or 6013s that are classed as "farmer's rods"? Cheers. Edited September 13, 2016 by walshie
ditchman
two basic rods... Rutile and low hydrogen........there are many other types....but for general fabrication ...you need Rutile....the numbers on the rods refer to the fracture strenght higher the number the harder the steel....go for a lower number as it will be easier to use.........weld clean....make sure your earth strap is anchored on clean material...and clean the edges up you are going to weld... figgy
Go buy a box of Murex Vodex or Zodian they will both do all you need for general welding of mild carbon steel.
clumber
+1 for the Vodex and Zodian, Use both regularly. Remember to dry them out before use, and hour in a oven and they'll work better.

Or don't let them get damp in the first place, there was always a pack or two in the airing cupboard when i was welding just in case a mate needed a few. Tam
+1 for the Vodex and Zodian, Use both regularly. Remember to dry them out before use, and hour in a oven and they'll work better. Let it purposly stick on first arc & will dry out braw. The benifit of MMA is it doesn't need to be spotless if you have the current set & it's singing
figgy
As Above jam the damp rod onto the steel for a couple of seconds and watch it dry out but break it off quick or it will glow and the flux will fall off as you try to pull it away from the metal its stuck to.
