Hendrix's rifle
So, brother went to Leeds to see his girlfriend, going up the m6 and the car just stopped... so he says. Rac recover it home and I give it a going over. It's a 1.1 peugeot 206 with 150k on the clock. Did a head gasket on it a few months back and all was well. Jumped in it, went for first but nothing there. Went for second, nout there. Same with the rest of the gears. Quick look underneath revealed the problem, gearbox drain bolt worked it's way loose... and relived itself and contents somewhere on the m6 a hundred quid in my pocket even if it means I have to do it quater mile from home on my back because it's stuck there this got me thinking, what's the best roadside repair someone has had to do? Up to now my best was a cam belt on a bike I used to own with nothing but a flat ish stick, a 5mm Allen key and a 10mm spanner who's next? ph5172
Did a replacement alternator (bought from a scrappy) with an adjustable and a wheel brace on a ford escort (that only had 4 gears) Did skin my knuckles though.
Wb123
Main oil feed line wore through, engine out in a layby and soldered up on a camping stove. I was however travelling with some sockets and a friend who was suitably minded.
Gordon R
Many years ago, I owned an Austin Princess 2.2. It wen through alternators at an astonishing rate. Had it to an auto electricians - said I was unlucky. I carried a spare alternator in the passenger footwell. I changed it one night - a few miles from home - with no light and worked around a hot exhaust, in the dark.

Kalahari
Took the gearbox out of a Chevy pickup to sort the clutch (full of sand) on a Kalahari "road" such fun no real room to work and 115 Fahrenheit in the shade. oneshot1979
Changed out a blown turbo on my sisters astra 1.7 dci ( the dreaded isuzu version )on her driveway. No big task really but I'd only been out of hospital 4 weeks after a near fatal accident. I'd list all the injuries but it'd take a while. Looked a bit Mad Max ish. What with a wheel chair crutches and a ratchet strap through a tree to move around the job. I think my family did it deliberately to get my spirits up. Kalahari
Another Kalahari family story, my dad put a tree stump into his sump so he took the pan off, lay it on the sand and broke down some Martini Henry bullets melted them down and poured the lead to block the hole put it all back together, poured in some oil and drove home. Faiirly cool calm and collected my old man. David.
