bjue485
hi everyone,i have a question regarding filling up a pcp ok im new to this so please bare with me,i think im ok topping up from empty to say 200 bar from a bottle the thing worrying me is topping up from say 100 bar,do i just top up 100 bar or will my bottle register the remaining air in the gun and top to 200 bar ive been told to not go off my guns guage hopefully somebody can explain this to me much appreciated julie thank you in advance
Rewulf
The gauge on the gun is not to be relied upon. Use the gauge on the bottle . However the main problem is that when a lot of air is put in,the temperature in the cylinder goes up,thus increasing the pressure. Similarly ,when the pressure is released rapidly,it goes down, its just physics. Fill the cylinder in stages of say,30 bar at a time (450 psi) give it a few minutes between each fill ,or if you like ,half fill it ,give it 5 minutes ,then top it up to max. There are no issues topping it up from whatever pressure, although you may hear a loud click,if it has a reg. Do not put in more than the max fill pressure, which is usually on the side of the gun or cylinder.
Dasher
The gauge on the gun and the bottle (or pump) will read the same when connected and pressurised i.e. if your gun has 100bar left after use when you connect the bottle to refill it both gauges should read 100bar, if you need to refill to 200bar then simply fill until the gauge shows 200bar, both gun and bottle gauges should read 200bar but gun gauges are only a rough guide so stick to reading the bottle gauge. One of my guns if filling from say 100bar will require 150bar of pressure to first open the valves, then the gauge will drop back to 100bar and then fill. oowee
Just as an aside. Last time i had my bottle refilled they checked the guage. It was miles apart from the guage they use. I know how much it is out by so fill based on that but i still think its largely a guess. My bottle is now out of date so on next fill i will have to have it tested and get a new guage fitted. Not wanting to hijack the thread. Any advice on what guage to buy? There seems to be lots at all sorts of prices.

bruno22rf
You should be able to buy a gauge from your local Dive shop - ask them to fit it and check it against their gauge.
