TaxiDriver
weve got the forms for my son to apply for a driving licence, his form teacher has endorsed a couple of photos, and will sign his application, AND we've got his birth certificate. But for the love of all things sensible, How on earth is he supposed to have any of the other **** that they also want to support his birth certificate and photos as proof of identity He's sweet 16 for heavens sake !! Being on the poverty line (well, hanging precariously from it) we don't have passports as we don't travel, Out of all the carp they'll accept it seems that to get a driving licence, we or He, will have to apply for a passport at the prevailing cost, No small coincidence I suspect as a driving licence is free ? Lloyd90
There's a list somewhere with all the acceptable forms of ID. Firearms (& shotgun) certificates are accepted as are bank statements. Good luck to your lad with the driving, ps if you think that the cost of the passport is bad, wait until they hit you with the cost of the car, insurance, driving lessons etc Remember when I was 17 I got a job washing dishes to pay for my lessons cos my mum couldn't really afford it! Earned a bit of pocket money as well

Adge Cutler
I have much sympathy for you TD ... went through the same thing with my daughter recently... Its total ******** as you now know. Anyway I rang the DVLA and they said they would accept just the original of the Birth Certificate. Guess what 3 weeks later application returned invalid.. I do feel sorry for the poor bloke I rang... I think he wished he didn't have a birth certificate after I finished with him. I have written to my local MP about it ...its a bloody Joke. ! TaxiDriver
My sons been looking for work but nowadays opportunities seem scarce for a 15/16 yr old, Seems nobody will employ hi until he's 16 yrs and some months. We have the list of acceptable things and being only 15 going on 16 he doesn't have any of them, Ironically being as he's English by birth and living in his own country goes against him as if he was an immigrant, he'd have one of the various acceptable certificates of naturalisation He's getting a 50cc scooter,
Adge Cutler
I forgot to mention my second conversation with The DVLA they said the original of the Birth Certificate and the original of National Insurance card or a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) showing your National Insurance number would be acceptable. We sent off both a week ago but are still waiting. It might be a lot cheaper to ask the DWP for a NI card than get a Passport If you turned 16 and didn’t get a numberYou should be sent a National Insurance number automatically just before your 16th birthday if you live in the UK. Call the National Insurance numbers helpline if you didn’t get one and you’re under 20.
TaxiDriver
Thanks, We will ring the NI Helpline tomorrow and see about getting him an NI number issued asap. He's not 16 until end of November (29th) and wants to do his CBT the following weekend around the 3rd/4th December
Lord Geordie
Just sorted my sons out! All he needed was a birth certificate, and proof of his national insurance number! Took a week from posting it off, to getting his license through the door
TaxiDriver
LG - thanks that's heartening to know Just gotta hope I can get (or find out when?) him an NI number issued. We managed to find him an immaculate April 2013 50cc scooter with only just over 2000 miles on the clock, Used by a middle aged bloke to go to/from the railway station. TaxiDriver
Thanks to the link posted by Adge Cutler, I've been onto the NI Helpline and they referred me to HMCE who confirmed they will only deal with my son directly (he has to phone them himself even though he's a minor) but they will then send him a letter containing his NI number, Usually within 7 to 15 days. Thanks for the help, posts
walshie
Back in the day, people used to apply for a provisional licence and get one in the post with no documents at all, as I did. Provisional licences were not accepted as proper ID, but as soon as you passed your test, this piece of paper became "proper." Think how many bank accounts and credit cards an unscrupulous person could get these days if they hadn't toughened up the initial part of it. As much as I sympathise we all complain about fraud and migrants stealing benefits etc but then we as a country complain when the government takes steps to try and limit or stop the fraud because it inconveniences us 😂
TaxiDriver
3x I've phoned today and had the run around. 1st They won't talk to me as my son wasn't present 2nd time, They wouldn't talk to my son as we couldn't give the reference number for his child benefit 3rd time, Shot down as I/we couldn't give his NI number. Duhhhh that's what we're trying to obtain ---- decided to give up for today On the upside : my eldest son and his partner had a baby girl at approx 2am today :) Edit : 4th time lucky, His NI number should be with him within 15 days Edited November 17, 2016 by TaxiDriver
