steve_b_wales
These are brilliant bino's, and a lot under your budget. Don't let the price put you off though. http://www.fotosense.co.uk/hawke-nature-trek-8x42-binoculars-35-102.html http://www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/Hawke8x42Nature-Trek-120.htm

ChrisPCarter
Have a look at the Hawke Frontier ED range. Some of the reviews put them up there with pairs costing over a grand. I've got the 8x43's which I picked up for £250 in a sale but the 8x42 are cheaper. http://www.hawkeoptics.co.uk/frontier-8x43-binocular-green.html

fortune
It depends on what you are going to use them for and what sort of conditions that they are going to be used in. A mag of more than 7or8 is difficult to hold the image steady in hand hold. I now use a pair of leica 8x20 Trinovid BCA. Although they are above your stated budget they are world class optics. They are small and light enough to put in the top pocket of your jacket and they are superb in low light conditions. With mine I have seen pigeons flighting to a field about a mile and a half away. If you are going to look at something then you want a clear picture of what it is you are trying to see. With a bit of love and care they should last a lifetime. And they are with me all of the time in my top pocket to check out that hedgerow or If it is a rabbit or a clump of thistles.
Harnser
Look at the minox range . I have an old pair of 10 by 50 night and day bins . They are excellent and I cannot fault them other than being a little bit on the large size . The optics are as good as you will get and equal bins that cost a lot more . The best makes (Leica, Zeiss, Swarovski etc.) can be good value 2nd hand.
