charlie-hunter
Just started to load shotshell cartridges. To start with I have been loading 30gm loads with green dot. Using Hull cartridge hulls everything worked fine. But loading Eley first hulls the primers blew out. Is this common for certain hulls and which hulls are best to reload? Guest cookoff013
It's the maxam large factory primers. Use cheddite hulls and cheddite/fiocchi primers. And why oh why are you using green dot for that? ?
Redgum
I scratch up the inside of the primer pocket with a scribe which makes them tighter.

sitsinhedges
Just use different cases that suit your chosen primer or a different primer such as a Fiocchi 614/615/616 which are slightly fatter .
charlie-hunter
Cheers S. I. H. Im using CCI 209 primers. Will try other hulls, do primers make as much difference as they do in rifle reloading?
super sharp shooter
They are bigger than the cx2000 primers

charlie-hunter
Cookoff , why oh why should i not use Green Dot powder? Which powder would you suggest being a good all-round powder?
Guest cookoff013
It's just the expense, lack of pressure, and at 30g lead loads are really inefficient. GD is for full throttle 32g 12gauge loads. Being full throttle 1400fps. With the larger powder charges makes GD one of the most expensive powders for 30g loads. Even reddot can handle 32g loads ! charlie-hunter
Thanks for the input Cookoff, I will be increasing the loads as I gain more experience and knowledge of shotshell loading.
Guest cookoff013
I'm assuming you are shooting birds. Load up big shot/shotcharges at slow speeds. I would read up and see what is best or available. I prefer heavyer payloads because speed isn't all its cracked up to be. As for increasing loads? Just find really good shells to make. Guest cookoff013
Let me put something in perspective. I used A1 for 42g lead subsonics. About 1050fps or so. The powder I used is not dissimilar. It can be pushed alittle more, maybe 1100-1200fps. I doubt, it has much scope below32grams of shot.
