What sort of damage is a 25.31? Lovely looking bit of stuff

I was out shopping with my mother and sister and browsed a few Omegas in the shops in Cardiff, although wasn't looking to buy.

My mother was looking for herself, she's worked all her life and is by no means a toff, she's spent the last 20 years running her own little rug shop.

Anyways, she paid into a savings pot all her life and its recently paid out so whilst having the house done up a bit she was just browsing a second hand shop and found herself a lovely little Rolex.

My sister told her to spoil herself as she could afford it so she did. As an aside I mentioned the Seamasters and the bloke told me he just had one in but hasn't advertised it yet as needs to be sent off for service and polish.

I had a look and he offered it for £1750. Compared to the ones I've seen online apparently this seems decent. Afterwards he told us hang on and went away and came back with a free Wolf watch winder.

I tried to pay the bloke but my Mother refused btw and paid for it as it is my Birthday. My other watches are two Seikos but each was given to me as a gift off someone I hold very dearly and are items I really treasure. I hope to keep them all for a very long time to come! :) Sorry for the long story.

Some interesting misconceptions about watches and value, but hey ho, everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I personally don't get why anyone wants to buy.a fake watch and sponsor scamsters. Loads of great cheap genuine watches around to suit any budget, why buy something illegal and fake? And those buying the "can't tell the difference" £500 ones, jeez, the scamsters just love you guys!!

Don't be fooled into thinking they are identical, put a photo on a specialised forum and see the watch get ripped apart.

I like fake watches. I think they make very nice 'demo version' of the real ones. I bought a cheap copy of a seamaster a while back, because I didn't want to shell out 5+K on a real one and discover I didn't like it. So I bough it for 50 quid, wore it for a while, and then bought the real one. Also bought a few other copies at the time, but didn't like the feel/size/weights etc.

They might not be as good as the real one, but they are amazing watches for the money. Seriously. My fake seamaster is more precise than the real one, I'm not kidding. Of course the details and finish is not exactly on par, but it's /pretty darn close/. The 'giver' on the seamaster is the amazing antireflection coating on the real one; the copy doesn't come close.

I also bought a fake rolex at the time for £100, and it's a MUCH, MUCH better watch than it's price tag would claim. The *bracelet* of my fake rolex is better than the real bracelet of my Seamaster. It's really, really nice. I didn't like the watch itself tho, so I 'saved' quite a bundle by trying the 'demo version' first. I checked the 'fake rolexes' websites and there migth be a couple of little things to give it away, but in fact, it's pretty darn close. It's all machined properly, adjusted properly, and works pretty nicely. The movement itself is of course all chinese, but externally, it's pretty close.

And guess what watches I wear when trampling in the mud or doing the garden? AND I enjoy telling and showing my chinese watches to people , I think it's pretty amazing for them to make that quality for that price. And to hell with the purists!

here's the two Omegas together. They are not the same models, but I was hesitating on the old 2500 or the new 8300, I picked the fatass one in the end, so there :-)

And the fake rolex. Saved a TON by trying this one first, I hate the weight distribution. Bracelet is fantastic tho, wish I could recycle it :-)

fakes are a disgrace

its not something I would support.

Yeah. whatever. I'm a nerd and an engineer, I want to know the justification on why it costs nearly 100 times more. There isn't one, apart from the fact people are brainwashed on the fact it's built by naked virgins using golden tools.

each to their own, I have a 50 quid timex, not a fake, lol,

I just don't agree with bootlegging. :good:

I also have 50 quid timexes. Oh, the *best albums* in my collection or record are... bootlegs. Never released for whatever reason, and 'liberated' by some fans.

Pitchfork waving fanatics are the same for whatever topic there is to wave at.

Does liking nice things made by craftsmen rather than cheap copies made in Chinese sweatshops make you a fanatic?

Ignorance as it's best. These copies are *so good* because they are not made in sweatshops, they are made by trained craftmen too, who very very likely make watches for many of the 'brands' you worship and make the odd quid in the evenning making copies -- very likely on the same machines, using the same steel etc. Trust me, it needs not just the right tools, it also needs the right materials, and a HUGE amount of training to make these copies. Sure, they are not as good as yours that have been polished on the thights of swiss virgins crafpersons, sure enough.

Just wait until they start making shotguns; I'd skip the first few batches, sure enough, but the chinese are now absolutely amazing at manufacturing stuff, AND contrary to what you might thing, many guys over therenow had had 20+ years of practicing, and it shows.

But as I said, I'm not a brainwashed dumbo, I'm an engineer, I try to document myself about a topic before I say something.

Liking nice things is ignorant and fanatical now? Yeah I'm sure the Rolex makers stay behind after work and knock out a few to stick on Ebay.

To correct you (at least on Rolex) no, they aren't made of the same steel and no they aren't chinese movements. They are ETA movements, so basically you're buying a swatch which is why it's cheap. (and nasty)

I read that rolex and omega patents ran out many years ago, but why cant these shysters call them by another name, like ROLLEX or OMMEGA,

I understand they have invested in the same machinery as the real companies, and that they are using swiss movements, I think this is an even bigger mickey take, at least you knew where you stood with the old fakes.

When you see these copies, would you seriously consider buying a real one secondhand?

The better the fake, the better it is for an authorised dealer, the manufacturers don't take it lying down, you cant access the lost and stolen register anymore unless you are an authorised dealer, there are ways to protect your brand.

I just hope a rogue employee never drops a fake in with a batch and it gets through to a member of the public, now that would be awful.

Fake watches, like many illegal trades, directly support terrorism, anywhere where there is unregulated trade, fakes, drugs, etc etc. ISIS and the like will be profiting somewhere not too far down the line. If you're happy with that, enjoy your cheap watches.

Your forgot pedophiles and hitler, slip of the keyboard?

I actually did, I *very likely* own more (original) watches than many of the 'purists' here, from vintage omegas, and quite a few nerdy collectors, and I also have a handful of 'branded' new ones. That's why I can talk, because I can compare, contrary to the hot air windmills I seem to have excited around here.
