sweepy
Hi all has anybody got any advice on what is the best distance to zero my .22rf in at as I have heard so many different stories. At the moment I have it zeroed in at 50yards and am using eley sub ammo(getting a good grouping and on target). The old boy I go lamping with has his rifle set at 40 yards but he is shooting much far out which he said is just worked out on experience because he said he been doing long enough he knows where the bullet is going(must be true all the time i have been with him never seen him miss). But at gun shop yesterday and gunsmith said zero it at 83 yards because at this range you can allow for the 2 1/2 inch drop at a 100 yards anrd 75 yards. But still also been told 75 yrads is the best range,or should i just do what iam happy with cause i don't miss much and i am quite happy with how am progressing so your opionion would be apprieated. JohnGalway
I think most people would zero at 60 yards Sweepy. There was a thread on this not so long ago, there were some at 50 yards, 60 yards and I believe one at 75 yards. I zero for 60 using Eley subs like yourself, and I know at 100 my shot is bang on where my reticle starts getting thicker. Works OK for me until I get a fancier scope anyway. sweepy
Cheers for that John I was also advised not to go for to bigger magification on scope as this would lull you in to a false sense of security and then you would start shooting at thing above the rifles capability am usinh 3.9-40 scope with it set at 5-7 on mag adjustment Sweepy

Russell
Here's a couple I've just done with the software mentioned in my previous post :- Zeroed at 50 yards for Winchester sub sonics And one for 60 yards :-
JohnGalway
Zeroed an old Baikal .22lr there a while back, was bang on target at 50 yards, but as far as I can remember and I'm pretty sure about it the 100 yard group was 9" below my aim point Can't make sense of that now with those tables. Was using Eley subs. Might try get my hands on that particular rifle again to see.

Works OK for me until I get a fancier scope anyway. Mine is pretty similar to your system and I think you are better setting up several bunny sized targets at differing distances and then just use common sense and fieldcraft to mentally "dialling it in"
fieldwanderer
my 2p; I zero my .22 at 50yds (got posh turetts) and I've got varying ranges noted down on my phone (always with me ). it's a simmons 6-24 x 50 (I think) For example; I was out last night with my mate and I told him if he wanted to take a perticular shot where he needed to be, the shot in question was 150yds and, counting clicks on my scope the difference between 50 and 150yds was 80clicks! but thinking about it that's (4clicks to an inch at 100) 3@150, erm 26.6" drop (in theory at least). Realisticly though, with a 3-9 X 40 scope he didn't stand a chance should've let me take it. Before people jump up and down about the range, with my rifle, scope and hypersonic ammo (159ft/lbs) and the fact I've shot targets internationally, I can drop 9 out of 10 at this range confidently so negative comments will fall on deaf ears :( If I couldn't do it - I wouldn't, that's why you'll never see me dance
henry d
hypersonic ammo (159ft/lbs) Just so those that skim threads understand it
fieldwanderer
hypersonic ammo (159ft/lbs) Just so those that skim threads understand it lol, fair play mate, just to point out - subsonic .22lr ammo tends to be about 89 ft/lbs (at muzzle), which these evil little things (the hypersonics) claim to have at 100yds :( AND aparently, there's even more powerful available! Just depends if you want to be nice and quiet or need the range more I suppose Must admit though, I can't hit the ******* at anything less than 30yds! Haven't found anything that works, including aiming a foot too low! maybe I should carry an air pistol just for the job!

Am i miss reading it?
Goldfish
I have target turrets on the scope. I have written in the range distances on the turret following a lot of target work. Use range finder and note range. Dial turret to match range. Shoot at point of aim. If there is no time for this I have the scope set for 75 meters and use the milldots and impact knowledge. No, you read Russels correctly Dan. Russel was using Winny subs, -9" @ 100 when zeroed at 50. Nick was using Eley subs (which I use) -7" @ 100 when zeroed at 50. In the baikal I shot the Eleys were going to -9" @ 100 when zeroed at 50. Hmm I've got both Winny subs and Eley subs today, I've a feeling they could be hurtling through a Sako barrel later on if it stays calm. You read it correctly , the red line is the bullet trajectory, the other coloured lines refer to the M.A.P. - Multiple Aims Points in my new scope - http://www.hawkeoptics.com/riflescopes/endurancemap.htm Had this scope for 5 weeks now, so far not had any problems with it & very pleased with it. Think I was the first person to own one in the U.K. . Let us know how you get on with the Eley subs please John.
naddan28
That is a hell of a difference in drop, for two different types of subs? Surely, if your gun groups ok winnie all the way, due to flatter trajectory?

JRDS
50 yard zero is also an 18 yard zero according to Chairgun (1.5 inch scope height, MV 1040, BC .140) and with less than a half inch deviation between 10 and 50 yards, following on from this the drops are : 60 -.73 70 -1.8 80 - 3.3 90 -5.1 100 - 7.3 110 -9.9 120 -12.9 130 -16.3 140 -20.1 150 -24.3 Moral of the tale, it ain't a long range round ATB John
