Rewulf
You take it that I would rather have stayed in? From the SIX words I posted?!!?? Do you read tea-leaves and make contact with the spirit world in your spare time? All I was doing was expressing my opinion that grrclark's post was the first that made any sense to me. Why? Because he is absolutely right about political expediency. Remember the old adage, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer still."? Well, when states such as those listed by the OP are looking for something to tie themselves to it's probably better to welcome them in than to slam the door and let them go off to the dark side. Well why didnt you say that in the first place? The tea leaves were wrong this time..it happens

I'm really sorry to add to the debate but "political expediency" doesn't work for me. It was a decision so monumentally flawed on every level that I can't believe that anybody (much less everybody) would fail to see the financial implications of allowing twelve basket cases to join the EU. The drain on the EU's finances has bankrupted the whole project and to what end?

I think the game plan has been corrupted though

To stop the former eastern block countries from being re-annexed by Russia? Preventing the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) rising again as a world super power controlled yet again from Moscow?....the Western World and the US wouldn't like that! The drain on the EU's finances has bankrupted the whole project and to what end? Vince, they don't need to have any money. The EU gives them loads in grants and subsidies. Then takes it back when they spend it on EU produced goods. That is the whole point. Where did these countries shop for their goods before the EU took them in? Russia, Japan, China............. Now they are locked into a single market trade agreement so they have to spend their new wealth within the EU. That is basically the reason why the Yanks kept bombing South American countries who leaned towards communism. Get them into Uncle Sam's delivery book not the commies.
