al4x
Buy on condition and service history, if its the new shape and cheap with a decent history then it should be fine.

69chris
Old shape "classic" are less complicated and less goes wrong than the later "pram shape" whilst i agree there is slightly less to go wrong, isnt it the classic that has cronic head gasket/cracked heads/ over heating issues ?? al4x
whilst i agree there is slightly less to go wrong, isnt it the classic that has cronic head gasket/cracked heads/ over heating issues ?? That was normally round 03 plates, I had a 55 plate before this one and the mechanics aren't that different. The new shape are quite a lot more economical and refined. Things to look at on the old shape are cracked springs, sump rusting as they stuck a piece of foam on for some reason that seems to hold water and rust through. Then more general things. Generally parts are cheap through milners and they are pretty easy to maintain yourself.
Red-dot
I personally prefer the Classic model over the later shape if it is a car to use without being too "Jappy". Make sure timing belt has been done and blank off the soot chucker which takes 30minutes to do and if you drive on mud i would definately advise you ditch the Bridgestones and fit some BFG muds. Oil changes must and should be done every 6-7,000 but some owners tend to leave the oil filter as it is above a flimsy sump guard which if bashed can be a pig to align the 8 little bolts. Front wishbone bushes are commonly worn out and are evpensive to have done. Headlight bulbs are from a pre war era but can be upgraded in an hour or less. Also rear leaf springs are made of cheese so check them with a wire brush and if broken replace with non genuine parts.
