Am sure the more motoring au fait on the site can give me an insight to this: am looking to buy a newer car (probably 14 or 15 reg), have got a little diesel Nissan at the minute and was looking at something similar size wise, the question is would you go for diesel again or petrol, am at min paying £30 tax, someone said diesels are being slated and the tax will be dramatically increased, someone else said it has been proposed to have a min £450 road tax irrespective of fuel type...maybe ive got the wrong end of the stick but does any of you more learned gents know owt about the car tax and any proposed new car tax system?.....any comments appreciated....thanks...atb....misser

ps..any recommendations for a small car...was thinking another nissan, kia, hyndia or skoda fabia...

Diesels Tax are an ongoing thing,,they will increse year on year, that is fact..

They want them off the road,,wondering how many will be for sale in the next couple of years..??.

Mine included,lol..

If I was upgradeing it would be petrol,,They will keep stinging as long as you hang onto them..

There are petrol options out there,if you want to change take the warning signs about Diesel as fact.

My advice,,Get Petrol..you nearly get the same as diesel these days, and of course it is slightly cheaper to buy...

Don't believe any thing you hear

Till it happens

+1,the 1st people to react will be the manufactures when they will rapidly reduce production of deisel cars.

I agree it will happen, we where converted when my wife bought a new Fiesta Titanium X in 2015.Runs an ecotech petrol engine that does 67mpg and (at the time before the change ) £0 road tax.I will be ditching my deisel when she gets her new one in 2018.

Think I would play it safe and wait another year if possible before buying a new car.

The newer petrol engines certainly seem to have cracked the problem of power to economy but it does make me wonder how many miles a newer engine will do before it gets expensive to fix, the TSI engines in VW etc. seam to have a short life and the Toyota engines appear to consume oil at an unbelievable rate after 50k. If you a looking to buy new or newish and sell on with low miles it may not be an issue, but if you were buying a higher millage car or looking to run it into the ground I would probably avoid the smaller engine petrol's tuned to within an inch of their lives.

Yes the Ford engines are really cracking on,,3 pistons not 4.

But really long legged,You do not need 5th until you reach 55/60mph.

Very quiet as well..They produce about 125 bhp..

The slightly dearer engine produces about 155 bhp,Amazeing car..

Diesels are deffinatly on the way out,They will make it so with very high taxation not only on road tax but diesel fuel as well..

Trouble is lorries are going to be hit hard as well,Higher Prices for Delivery.

So cost of products will go up..

Wife bought the 125 and after putting a few k on it,sent it off to Ford for Mountune upgrade. It was fun as standard but now it just puts a massive smile on your face. We've put 19k on it since it was new in Nov 2015 and no issues at all.I will find out what it's like long term as it gets handed to me in Nov 2018 when she gets her new shape ST3.I will ditch the C3 Picasso tdi then, depending on the deisel issue at the point or if no usduecwill keep it for fishing trips.Youtube clip of what one guy with the ecoboost

We initially went for the full Mountune mod,Reason as Sue wanted 5 Doors and at the time you could only get the ST in 3Doors (America has always had them). However with the launch of the ST line you can now get the ST3 with 5Dr.If she waits till 2018 a new shape comes out with new dash layout ect.So back in Nov 2015 she bought the Titanium X as it had the full leather and cruise control ect.We then got the Mountune MR165 upgrade after runni g it in.(could of been done when we ordered the car but we didn't know)Car looks bog standard other than you can see a intercooler rad under the bottom grill and a different exhaust (not loud and stuck with a single pipe) plus rear discs fitted.Suspension was stiffened but not lowered.

I've been accumulating new bits ready to bang on when I get it.ST full leather recaro's,new performance shocks/springs.Going to change all the hoses to Red (as she picked black from Mountune). Its going to be my little project when I fully retire in October 2018.

Just ordered a front/rear diffuser this afternoon and now looking for a rear spoiler from a ST.I should get some money back when I flog the original roof spoiler and leather interior

Davyo - you sure about the mpg as the rental firm I work for have small Fords as 'stock' rentals and the one thing all our customers complain about is the poor consumption. Ford (and all makers) claim high mpg but none get anywhere near the actual. One survey suggested missing by 30-50% with only BMW getting anywhere near and they were 20% out. We have a mini and our is 25% away from the claimed figure. Having said this I do like the small Fords - hate Vauxhalls! Can't believe frogs bought this company.

Book says 67mpg, we have managed 62mpg @ 55mph with cruise on through the night on a run down to Silverstone.Sue 90% of the time drives she stole it.But id say we are I still achieve low 50's when I get a chance to get behind the wheel.

With me it's not really the mpg,it's just this engine is unreal.Ive has turbo Calibras, twin turbo tdi S type and loads of hot hatches like Xr2/3,GTI's and nothing has exited me more than this little ecoboost.
