A reliable line.

Aga man, Gentleman that he is, has held off shooting this line until I returned from a few days working away. I encouraged him to either shoot it alone on Friday or take his new side kick Wilksy but he was having none of it. So my Sunday morning special was rather earlier than normal and then I headed out over the Humber bridge to our rendezvous point for a ten o' clock meeting.

 

Barley was the preferred field and Aga man had a plan. This was not to shoot the laid patches but to shoot one corner where the barley was very thin to make picking up without a dog easier. This meant drawing the birds off the usual line. The plan was thwarted to an extent by a 20mph wind which blew the birds off their usual course and took them partly over the village and definitely over the wrong end of the field.

 

We saw a lot of birds on the line. This is a line I have been shown a number of times now and it has never failed. Today it had over a thousand birds on it but only a very small % decoyed and the rest headed off into the distance to a crop which they must have found only recently. The first hour was good, the second very poor, the third much better and the fourth just about OK.

 

We had 104 on the clicker when we packed up and found almost all of them. Wilksy, who was probably playing with his children in his garden within earshot, issuing expletives at the sound of every cartridge being fired, would have been a very welcome addition at the end as he is a determined finder of missing birds. We lost a handful only.

So if the plan had played out you could have tripled the bag?

Still a good few hours of shooting. Thanks for sharing! I had my forst 100 on a barley field on wednesday.. only fee birds decoyed guessing but was very hot after was better until dried up at 4pm

Great to have you over again JDog. Although i knew 100 was on the cards today it wasn't as easy as i thought. Being slighty hungover and very tired didn't help my shooting either.

Yes you are quite right Wilksy, the farmer has been quite bothered by these pigeons. The areas we shot over a fortnight ago have been completely stripped with no heads left on the crop!

 

The lovely african lady up lane was happy to take 15 fresh pigeons off me, the rest are cooling on the garage floor and luckily the stiff breeze is keeping the flies away.

Entertaining report as per normal Mr JDog , You need to be very lucky to get everything right on the chosen day after leaving a field till everyone is ready , well done to you and aga man for overcoming the problems , excellent bag and pick up.

 

Barley must now be the number one choice in most areas although there are some getting back on our peas now they are beginning to drop and are in full pod , just need a bit of rain now to bring them on for vining .
