jonno 357
hiya gents, this might seem like an odd post , but can speed limiters be bought and(easily and cheaply) retro fitted to a car ?. my reason for asking , is that , ive recently noticed that im getting so preoccupied with not speeding , that i feel as if im not paying enough attention to the actual business of driving . drifting 1mph or 2mph over the speed limit was never an issue as im not really a speeder anyway , and many cameras and police authorities give you the 10% + 2mph leeway anyway , but , im also aware that some of them dont . the implications of getting a speeding ticket can be quite expensive , fac issues , big fines , vocational license issues , insurance premiums going through the roof. id much rather spend my time behind the wheel , not crashing , rather than looking constantly at my speedo , and scouring the streets for mobile camera vans. before anyone pipes up that i need to learn to drive , dont waste your time and energy , only constructive answers are required thanks. Dont bother with them. Take you front number plate off and stick it on your dash board. The police mobile transit vans cant detect them. 243deer
my wheels are original factory fitted 15" diameter - 380mm - the tyres have an 80mm profile adding 160mm giving an overall diameter of 540mm when new. The radius therefore being 270mm. Once the tyres have 6mm of wear the radius reduces to 264mm. Approximately a 2.2% difference - this then has to be the +/- tolerence in the accuracy of my speedo. Except if the 3 roadside mph advisory signs that I pass regularly are correctly calibrated my car speedo reads 31.5 mph when I am doing 30mph. I have just fitted new tyres all round so even allowing for the .66 mph differential at 30mph caused by tyre wear - my speedo will still read nearly 1mph over with worn tyres If I stick to 30 on my speedo I will probably be doig 28.5 to 29 mph - I am sure this is true due to the number of morons tailgating me with absolutely no respect for the villages I am driving through or the conditions, constantly looking down at their speedo because I am having the temerity to drive so 'slowly'. I doubt that they have ever driven an open tractor or worked behind the cones on a motorway to even realise how fast they are going or how truly dangerous their driving is. My best mate was killed when we were 14 by a motorist doing 35mph past a school so hats off to you mel b for taking responsibility for your own actions and ensuring you are showing due respect to our speed limits which most folk seem to have forgotten are there for a reason and not just the whim of some politician. My mrs likes the sat nav on to beep at her if she forgets a speed limit, personally I concentrate on my driving and know what speed I am doing. There is no excuse for speeding. Paddy Galore!
I've got a plug in unit on my caddy van, ex british gas van it's called Viezu or something like that, just plug it in and go, it can be re programmed to reduce top speed, they're £250 plus the vat. mines limited to just a bit over the national speed limit so I might just get away with a telling off. MPG is good though, a noticeable improvement from the tranny connect and combo I had before.
mel b3
i think that i should explain a little further gents. im a 48yr old , professional driver , with a clean licence . and without blowing my own trumpet , im a damned good driver in every way , but , its not only about keeping my licence clean , its about being the best / safest driver that i can be . not only do i want to keep my clean licence in its present condition , i also dont want to drive around at 25mph and hold up other traffic . i was just curious as to whether or not something could be fitted that would limit my speed to exactly 30mph , that way i could spend more time watching the road , without looking at my speedo. i drive a bin lorry , whilst at work ive seen countless binmen get hit and have near misses , due to moron drivers that speed or drive like maniacs for whatever reason , i just dont want to be one of the morons. ive been hit by cars several times myself , ive always been lucky and never picked up any serious injuries , the worst incident was when a van driver hit me , the impact slammed me onto the bonnet so hard that it left my imprint , id seen him speeding towards the back of the truck , so i ran in front of the truck for cover and onto the pavement , i was on the pavement when the moron hit me , he couldnt be bothered to stop behind the truck so he just mounted the pavement without slowing down. i dont want to be that moron , i want to be better. AVB
What cars have them as standard? The only ones I am aware of are Mercedes and BMW. Considering that it is just a variation of cruise control I don't see why all cars with cruise control don't have it.
