Freelander fault finding problem

A friend of mine has a 08/09 Land Rover Freelander, he's been having some problems with it, when he is driving and holding his speed at say 35 mph it starts to judder as it its in to high a gear or lack of fuel, (does not happen when cruise control is engaged) he asked a mobile mechanic to come and put his box on it and see what faults come up, if any, the mechanic came and plugged his box in and said I can get in but it will not show me what's wrong without LR software? I have spoken to a couple of people and they said you can read the fault codes, all you need is a box that you plug-in between the car and computer but this mechanic said its impossible to find the fault without LR software so my mate is thinking of taking it to a LR dealership.

Any help appreciated.

Is this a mk1 freelander?

If so could be seized VCU. Look for strange tread wear, kind of saw tooth fashion. If you imagine a circular saw blade with the clearance angle trailing the cutting tip of the tooth. It's a job to explain but I know what I mean.
