ditchman Posted August 27, 2017 Report Share Posted August 27, 2017 Had a little ride round today......quite a few pigeons moving about in 2's and 3's.............and had a look at the oak trees,.......in the last couple of years acorns have been quite sparse....shame...as it always provided me with a bit of good sport once the acorns had soften and broken up.. anyway have noticed this year that all the smaller oak trees are loaded with acorns this year.....and all the large mature oaks...just have a sprinkling of acorns......for what reason i dont know....so it looks like i will have some sport this autumn... i have no Beech trees so i dont know what the mast is like this year...... Beautiful day here bright ...cool breeze...quite windy and quiet....just pleasant to be out, if i wernt doing the shop thing i would have set up today.. B391 Posted August 27, 2017 Report Share Posted August 27, 2017 Funny you should mention acorns on the smaller oak treees, just this afternoon I commented on the same from here in West Kent. The couple of smaller oaks near me are loaded with them. I thought it slightly odd, not seen that in the last 12 years I have been living here. Catamong Posted August 28, 2017 Report Share Posted August 28, 2017 Yes, I've noticed that the Oaks have plenty of acorns on them this year, that's bad news around these parts for pigeon shooters, as it means that the birds will not venture out onto the rape but stay in the woods until the acorns have been eaten up, which could be into February next year. Surprised to see a good number flighting into the linseed fields that were cut yesterday and today, going to have a day off work tomorrow and try my luck. Rape is almost a thing of the past in my part of Essex, poor prices and Flea Beetle being blamed, but I suspect farmers are a bit "lemming like" and follow fashion. Things like tractors with big rubber bands instead of wheels, big round bales then big square bales, John Deere combines etc have all gone through the area like an infectious disease.
