Curly87
sorry if this has been covered already but at the moment i am looking at getting into a touch of off roading mostly green laning for the time being. it will also be used for some lamping as well, my budget is around the £700 mark so which one of these would you go for or have for that matter and why?? it needs to be cheap to insure and not to bad on the road as this will be my only form of transport, which is why im thinking the series 3 is out already. been looking into the sj samurai, they seem pretty cheap to buy but i hear they are prone to rusting not sure if thats ture with the Vitara aswel, also how good are the standard 1.3 engines that are in the samurai?? this would give an advantage to the insurance being cheaper havent heard all to much about the fourtrak but what i have heard always seem to be good, so thats got to be an option then lastly the old hilux, i was thinking that this could have some use around the farm and i hear they are still pretty good for off roading  so it short it needs to be: cheap to run(ish) and buy, good off road and not to bad on so what do you think guys?? Your wisdom and knowledge will be much appreciated cheers, Tim

OldBill
one problem, i believe all greenlanes are now closed for motor vehicles, i may be wrong but again the bloody ramblers and horse riders got the one up on us. cheers flash i have heard that they have caused quite a havoc, but i think you can still drive down by-ways and there is still some of those around i hope Byways are the green lanes and no they are not all closed, but a bit of jiggery pokery has been going on and a fair few have been redesignated as restricted byways which means no motor vehicles. How they can say an historic 2 ton hay wagon and four would make less of an "imprint" on the ground I'm unsure, but of course the idiots who "mudplug" (bomb along 'til they get stuck, make huge ruts and then winch themselves out) spoil it for the rest- just like in shooting. Now, rant over; vehicle for £700- very restricted there. Depnds how much or how severe your off roading will be. A SIII can be had for £700- very good off road, adequate on road, very very basic, but simple to fix. I had one for several years and not a lot went wrong. An SJ very good off road, not so good on road, prone to chassis rail rusting, 1.3 considered the one to go for. Lada- hard to get hold of now, don't know the parts situation but very good off road. Fourtrack very very good mechanically, body prone to tin work, good off road, Mitsubushi Shogun / Pajero. I'm biased here I've got one. Very good off road, cheap (pattern) parts, comfy on road, will do speeds SIII and 90/110- onwards dream of. Toyota- very reliable, adequate off road, parts can be expensive, generlly well thought of. For reliabilty for £700. I would be going Jap. I would chose a Pajero, but I don't think any of the others will see you wrong. Off road, the greatest aid to progress are tyres...the tallest (not necessarily the widest) you can fit and AT LEAST as agressive a tread as All Terrain- I've Mud Terrain but don't really need 'em. I've voted other- Pajero.

Its a 1997 1.6 jx. The bodywork is good apart from one sill which i just had plate welded and the red paintwork is a little faded. . Oil and filter has been changed every 5k ive done 16k in it and its NEVER let me down. At the moment there are no rear seats but i can put these back in . pretty good off road too its got standard goodyears on it but never got stuck in the winter. Mileage is 92k and its got around 9 months mot and a couple of months tax on it. Im only asking around £850 ish the price reflecting the faded paint work.. Codswallop, Mines great and is easy to sort out when it goes wrong. Parts are dead cheap and readily available from loads of different sources. Plus, they're brilliant off road  P. fusion
It's called supply and demand,if they keep breaking down parts are going to be cheap and readily available. They may be brilliant off road, but you have to go on road to get there first

I can count the number of time they let me down on one hand.

al4x
don't whatever you do go out and buy a cheap landie unless you are a very confident mechanic, Basically the on road drive will be pretty bad you'll only get the petrol engine that uses petrol like its going out of fashion. Suzuki SJ's are fine but the tin worm gets them very badly so watch what you buy and for greenlaning the 1l is pretty gutless, best option on the list is the fourtrack, I know I'm biased as I've got one but if you find one with little rust and treat it with a bit of TLC it will keep going and going. £700 will get you one and it will do 70 on the road and do between 25 and 30mpg depending how you use it. Only other option would be the vitara and if you can find one on budget go for it slightly less hard off roader than the fourtrak but will be better on road
