henry d
I`ve been out to walk my dogs by the river and I noticed a woodpigeon in the water by the rocks on the opposite bank to mine. Now I`ve seen them bathe before but this one was just sitting in the water and after 10 seconds or so it had a bit of a flutter and then fly a couple of yards to the bank where it settled on the rocks, a second or so later a woodpigeon I hadn`t noticed that was close to the first on the rocks, flew a few yards and settled in the water. This bird started to flutter and splash, as birds do to wash, then stopped and just sat in the water with half it`s breast under, for a minute or two. It then had another wash then flew to within 4-5 feet of the one on the rocks that looked to be dozing now. 10 yards further up river a third bird followed the same routine as the first two I have to say I have never seen them behave like this, although I have seen them fly down and have a bath then depart straight away. It is however really hot at the moment, so have you ever seen anything like this before ??
EvoCars
ive seen them sitting in the edges of the pool at the back of my house, only when its real quiet and they feel calm tho, they will stay there for 3-4 mins sometimes, in the water
Lancs Lad
My guess....... Soaking its feathers so that its chicks can get a drink. Seen something similar before with birds sort of dropping onto a lake, and then flashing straight up again.

Don't think it is that Lancs Lad as Pigeon young are fed on milk, regurgitated by the parents. There is enough fluid in that for them to survive, even in the hottest weather. Cranfield
I have seen pigeons land on the water, quickly drink and then take off again. This happens a lot on the River Medway where it runs through the town. I assume the birds are concerned about the pedestrian traffic around. tiercel
This may seem daft! Could it be that they were just taking a nap after a bath? I know I like to. Maybe it's just my age.

Strangely enough that occured to me, as they sat all puffed up on the warm stones with their necks relaxed and looked to be very relaxed.
