12gauge82
They can be kept and handled up to and during tours so I'm sure they can be kept afterwards in the right conditions, it's just going to cost money. You can't have your cake and eat it, you said it was only a "small number" that needed euthanizing so it would be a small numer that would need looking after in special conditions if they really can' be rehabed, a small price to pay for the service these animals will have given! Can’t argue with the logic used here. It’s all very valid.
CharlieT
I think I'm right is saying the military euthanize, for various reasons, about 50 dogs a year. The small number who pose a risk to public safety due to their training as, for want of a better description, military attack dogs and the like have no place in a civilian or home environment and by far the kindest solution for the dog is to put it down. Far kinder than locking it in a kennel 24 hours a day. On a couple of occasions over the years, I have had a sheepdog that has proved to be "untrustworthy" to both sheep and people. I would not have dreamt of re homing it, I put it down.
stumfelter
Can't the army rehome them with bull breed owners?
Luckyshot
Each to their own, I have a dog that the police and the courts class as dangerous but I wouldn't dream of putting him down. A dog is far more loyal than any man/woman.
12gauge82
I just totally disagree with the ethics of taking a dog, training it to attack and kill, the dog does the job it's been taught, prepared to put it's life down for it's hadler and possibly saving countless lives, the dogs loyalty is then rewarded with complete dishonesty and it's thrown away like a worthless peice of ****, that's no way to treat man's best friend that's shown nothing but couage and loyalty. In my opinion the people responsible could learn alot from these dogs.
12gauge82
Looking promising, the dogs due to be euthanized have had a reprieve for now, well done to danger mouse for posting on here and those who signed. Fingers crossed for a permanent reprieve.

KB1
My Mrs was reading this over my shoulder and said "you lot (PW Members) you kill just about any animal that the law allows you to kill in the name of sport or whatever you use as an excuse, and you dare to take the moral high ground when it comes to putting down a few dangerous dogs; what next, a bunch of Nuns giving advice on contraception?" I still haven't been able to muster a response

I still haven't been able to muster a response Killing an animal that is domesticated and that has been trained to do a task that may have saved soldiers lives is a lot different than killing a wild animal for either pest control or for the table. I think it would also be fair to say that the majority of people on here have a soft spot for dogs. Many own them be it as pets or working dogs, or somewhere between the two. It's not surprising then that we would campaign against them being ill treated or killed out of hand. Failing that the obvious response has two words and the second is "off"
KB1
I told her what you said, but she's still not buying it PS, she said to ask DM why did he conveniently leave out "For Sport"?

No particular reason. I guess it's implied anyway that whilst we might shoot for pest control or the table we're also shooting for the sporting side of our hobby. Few of us are professional pest controllers so we shoot because we enjoy it. However, just because we shoot various legal quarry it doesn't mean we aren't allowed to take "the moral high ground" where other species are involved. If you're using that logic then you might as well carry it forward and just say that we PW members aren't entitled to regard the actions of a serial killer as wrong.
