unico1
I think that’s what they are called but mine has fallen out of my miroku mk38 grade 5 stock. Can I buy a replacement or are the all different sizes.
Gunman
Yes you can buy ovals but they dont just fit in . I doubt BWM will supply one but its worth asking , even so they need to be fitted and finished . As a new stock is made the oval is fitted and then smoothed off flush with the wood before it is stained and oiled/ varnished . I have fitted new ovals to old stocks and I can sat from experience that no matter how careful you are there is always some marking around it , fine on an oiled stock but if it is stained varnish then very difficult to touch up and be unnoticeable. Westley
I made one many years ago from an old shilling piece to fit an AyA side by side. It must have been a long time back because the shilling was still legal tender !
Gunman
Shilling Eh ? last of the big spenders .Actually some of the older continental guns had "ovals" that were more round .

figgy
Don’t see many ovals engraved these days as it can devalue the gun. Not many keep a gun for life either. I don’t think they add anything to a guns looks as they tarnish or get stained by stock oil.
Gunman
Figgy ,the oval is a traditional decoration , but I do agree that on modern guns it is merely a nod back to the days of your. As to tarnishing , If one like all gentlemen had ones man take the gun to the gunsmiths at the end of the season for cleaning , the gunsmith would have no doubt have oiled and rubbed the wood including buffing the oval , just as he would have re-lacquered the action . All part of the service old boy!!

Old farrier
Hi personally like ovals in a stock along with teardrops and fine chequering all adds to the appeal and shows the skill and quality of the craftsmen that built it as for tarnishing never noticed it happen although I do always clean and polish my Guns all the best of

Luckily, I'd been doing a pattern check so hadn't moved about too much. Unluckily, I'd been in some long greass under an oak tree. Went straight back to have a search but had given up when I saw a very nicely coloured oak leaf on the floor. Bent down to have a look and damn me if it wasn't the oval. It had fallen face down and the back had turned into a deep rose gold colour.
