henry d
I`ve an old, P-reg, Vitara diesel and it has recently had a new starter motor fitted and about a week after it began to take 20 or more seconds to start up. I took it back and the heater plugs are OK and no hoses are crinped so it looks to be a fuel problem and they don`t have the specialist equipment to check the fuel pressure to the injectors So any ideas ?? many thanks for any replies ! Was it a re-conditioned starter motor H? Or in your terms, cheap It may be drawing to much current which will slow the starting process. henry d
Forgot to add it will start no bother bump starting, LB - the starter looks new and wasn`t cheap @ £180 + Also I have to have my foot to the floor for it to start which as I say can be anything from 5-20 seconds. Sundodger
Sounds like you have a fuel leak. Check for leaks no matter how small?
al4x
snap, sounds like an accumulation of air in fuel lines that eventually clears, has it been serviced recently, as I've seen a few do it when the fuel filter has been replaced badly. Might be worth trying a quick bleed at the fuel filter before starting and seeing if it starts rapidly after that.
henry d
It was serviced along with the starter, but as I say it was OK for at least a week then it started to play up. I`ll get under her and have a look though.

SPARKIE
sounds to me like the cranking speed isnt fast enough could be started for a petrol or battery on way out easy way to check is of anouther bettery do ya know anyone with a diesel with a big high power battery on like a passat if so jump with jump leads if she starts straight away ya might need a battery with more umpf cars that use a lot of ampage to start sometimes have enough power to turn the engine over but not enough to work immobiliser/ecu/ignition system'/fuelpump and various other electrics it only takes 1 of these to be low on juice to faulter..i wouldnt worry about a fuel leak if she starts straight away when bumpstarted it sounds like a problem with battery or starter....from my experience if was a fuel problem it wouldnt start by bumping and my experience is 10 years as a service tech for peugeot and a master tech for mazda...
