jking
Hi, I've bought some CCL conditioning oil to use on an already oil finished stock that isn't in bad nick, but has a couple of small scuffs I'd like to mask. When applying the oil to the stock I know that you need to avoid oil building up in the checkering, but does that mean that I should not apply any oil to the checkering full stop, or just make sure that it is buffed out fully? Thanks James
figgy
Best to mask the checkering until you stock is done. Then apply a thinned coat to the checkering. I was told a cotton bud dipped in teak oil and pressed against the checkering, it runs all through and that's it.

I'm not refinishing the stock - just a top up coat on top of the current finish. Thanks
Smokersmith
I've masked mine up before ... you don't see a difference ....
Scully
I sometimes run through the chequering with a clean toothbrush, which I find prevents a build up.

figgy
If your oy topping up leave the checkering unless it's worn to bare wood. Give it a good brush out with stiff nylon brush. No you can't tell it's different oils, most checkering is a slightly different shade. Look online at gunmakers they finish the oil finish then do the checkering. Your only looking to waterproof the wood of the checkering not achieve a oil finish. Edited January 21, 2019 by figgy
sabel25
I do the same and leave the checkering when topping up I also remove the forestock and do the inside to maintain water proofing
