Backlash
I hope this topic isn't beating a dead horse too much but as a football(soccer over here) fan in the US I don't get all the info I want. It is my opinion that Beckhams move was more for the career of his wife than for him. He is breaking down and has been for a few years, heck he is already hurt here! So after years of raising their kids ol' Posh wants back in the entertainment game and what better place than LA. He can squeeze what few remaining years he has out in an inferior, less competitive league(while earning big bucks) while wifee poo kick starts her career again. Don't buy any of the excrement about promoting football here since if Pele and Beckenbauer couldn't pull it off, I doubt Beckham can. Any merit to my thoughts or have I had too many pints? What say you guys and gals?
codling99
the beckhams have more hype and fame than pele,so i reckon they could become the next president lol.he s still a brill footballer, injured at mo yes,but he s bound to help them out ,even if it only the shirt sales. Mungler
David Beckham has had his day and he can't chase a ball anymore. He can still sell football shirts though. We in the UK have grown tired of the Beckhams - they are one of this country's better exports. Posh (and I use that description with caution) is walking proof that you can have no talent, no skill and no discernable beauty and still make it as a celeb. Fair play to the Essex girl, she married well. Next time you see her pouting in the media (and that's anytime you see her in the media) just consider how much her trademark pout has actually been stolen from Derek Zoolander. She is trying to pull off "Blue Steel".
Dunkield
For a start neither of them need to kickstart a career, they have enough money to last them if they lived to be 250. I watched the program on her on Tuesday and she had me (and mrs stuartp who isn't a fan) rolling round on the floor taking the mick out of herself and those arround her. Fair play, she doesn't doesn't take herself seriously at all, and I think she is well aware she has landed on her feet. I was in the States earlier this year, and pretty well all american's I spoke to had already decided they didn't like her, and that he is just a washed up has-been. Let's not forget none of us know anything about them, we may think we do but like all 'celebs' we see what the gossip mags churn out
Cranfield
Unfortunately, I don't think most Americans realised she was taking the mickey out of herself and took her too seriously, which is why that programme seems to have rebounded back on her disastrously, if the newspapers are to be believed. I don't agree that David Beckham is "past it", he could walk into any UK premier league team and the same goes for Spain and Italy. His end of season performances for Real Madrid and the last two games for England, show that he has plenty of skills left which make him a top player. The move to the US is partly to give Posh something to do, but I also believe that there will be a rash of David Beckham Football Academies spring up over there in the next few years. This is what he always said he wanted to do when he retired and ignoring the "giving something back" hype, will guarantee him (and his kids) a good living for the rest of their lives. Devon Fox
Beck's is a model pro, i have watched him play at old trafford many times and could never believe his work rate and commitment. The media love them, and they love the media, and who can blame them ..... i would mind 1% of what they have in the bank! I do question the motives of moving to the the states though, becks could offer a lot more to top class football yet, i think any prem team outside the top 3 could use his talent, you have to admire the way he came back from some serious stick from the media, and shoved it right up there noses! I think he will do really well in the USA, and it will help to push football to the kids, and America will eventually be a National team to be taken seriously. As for Posh, well she married a gravy boat in my opinion, i think she is responsible for making david more than just a football player. Here here. He's not past it at all, he lost it for a while but he's found it again and he's worked hard to do it. I still rate him, I think he's an exceptional talent and the experience he brings to any side will be a bonus. If the media circus he brings with him is good for the team or not remains to be seen. Far as I can tell America couldn't give a **** about about Beckham, much the same as I can't get excited about them taking an interest in "Soccer". For a start its football, not soccer. The game you play should be called handball or something. I have had the misfortune to watch a few "MLS" matches, to be fair the standard of play probably isn't far off 1st Division here but for christs sake sack the commentators and employ someone who knows how the game works. What the blue hell is an "MVP", they are not "plays" they are passes. It's not a "rebound" its a deflection. Grr
Oly
Don't think he's ever been out of La La Land, he doesn't even have a visitors pass to the real world!!
Backlash
Thanks for the replies guys. I just don't understand why he would leave the premeirship(its the best in the world IMO) unless it was for some other reason like his wife. They are media darlings over here right now and from what I see well recieved by the general public. You are right about the commentators here. That has been a complaint of mine for years but nothing has changed. The funny thing about the popularity of football here is that more people are watching now than ever before because of the advent of HiDef TV. Several friends have said they enjoy watching now but only in high definition. As the World Cup gets more and more popular, hopefully the MLS will too. Even heathen Yanks can see the difference in skill and play level and I guess some people expect the MLS to be nothing but full on internationals every time they take the pitch. Cranfield
In my humble opinion, the thing lacking in American "soccer" at professional level, is aggression and committment to the cause. The few games I have watched on TV over there, have been similar to our pre season "friendlies". There is nothing at stake, nobody wants to get hurt, so nobody tackles hard, nobody runs fast, all adding up to no fun to watch. Perhaps this will come with some Club maturity and history. All other US professional team sports have this "edge" to the games, with local rivalries, grudge matches, rich rewards for the winners and all the other things that can make sports great for the spectators, even the uncommitted ones. pin
You are right about the commentators here. There is a football show on Satellite TV here (Sky Sports on 9am-> Saturday during the season) called "Soccer AM". It has serious coverage but its primarily hangover TV, and very popular it is too One sketch they do is sending up American commentators with all the ludicrous things they say, like this :-

Did he help England win anything ? Nope, Was he better known for his hair style / wearing a sarong ? Yep. Can he sing the national anthem without auto cue ? Nope. Has he grown out of petulance ? Jury is still out. Does he deserve a place in the England squad ? None of them do, bunch of Hello ! obsessed prima donnas more interested in spit roasting, bling and bentleys

Indeed as our Colonial Cousin has pointed out, plenty of clubs and money in Europe.... He's doing what Lineker did in Japan - fair enough, not much more to add. I thought he was a good Captain but then again I thought Terry was a better Captain (that off the line mid air clearance did it for me, 101% commitment). Bagsy
I remember being stood in the corner in the Bobby Moore stand at West Ham when they were playing Man U - the abuse Beckham received when taking the corner licks was something else. I'm not a fan of his but hat off to him for putting up with it......though on those wages I'd give it a bash!

High Desert Hunter
I thank God for the Fox Football Channel, I played American football in high school, but after living in Europe for 7 1/2 years, I couldn't stand it anymore, and had taken a real shine to European football. My son is doing quite well, and I am glad he has chosen to stick with it instead of American style in high school, makes watching him play much more enjoyable. Mungler
The problem with American Football is that there is no fluidity or continuity to the game. It appears to be 1 minute's frantic activity followed by 15 minutes inactivity followed by lots of breaks.
