Pistol p
John Haynes has passed on at the age of 80. It's probably safe to say that we've all read or have some of his literature, and that its got out out of a tight spot every now and then. RIP. Diss4111
His tombstone will say 'Replacement is the reverse of the removal' I've lost count of how many times I have read that in the manuals
guzzicat
Always showed a nice clean hand pointing to a nut he removed with a clean hand, you then spent hours cursing with bandaged fingers ankle deep in empty WD40 cans to get same result
amateur
My wife had a Peugeot 104 many years ago and the Haynes Manual had the wonderful opening line of something like "You will be unable to do anything on this car apart from basic servicing - change the spark-plugs, oil and filter" And you know what - he was right. I flogged the car, complete with manual soon after.
Velocette
I was interviewed by him and another chap in the late 70s for a post as technical writer on the manuals team. A really pleasant fellow who had the hands on experience to enable him to determine ones usefulness. We spent an afternoon in the workshop chatting while I set about stripping a Norton Commando rolling chassis and giving a commentary on what I was doing and why. In the end re-location from Yorkshire was too problematic and I was unable to accept but he still sent me a very supportive letter and good wishes for the future. A very decent fellow !
