davmau
I am looking to purchase a .17 hmr and would like something a little different, maybe stainless steel or laminate/composite. Was thinking about the Savage 93R17 Laminate Stainless, any views on this or a simular looking gun.

Anschutz are the best out there but not sure if they do stainless or laminate/composite. Savage get great write ups in the US, think Marlin do a good laminate, stainless...and shoot well. Remington have a pretty big range too, would be worth a look. Some rate the Sako quad, but no stainless barrel option

jcbruno
I would say savage is a good bet for a lower budget rifle just do not buy a marlin I had one pure **** although it shot nice well it worked fyi savage rimmys are made in canada and are pretty good , but once again i would saty CZ,Anchutz,Sako maybe cooper or other good quality less known makes , i had a ruger mk77/17hmr for a while it was a fantastic shooter but for the same money get a haevy barrel CZ
tulkyuk
1 like mine is a good choice - Weihrauch HW60J in .17Hmr a little different from all the rest, its a really good accurate rifle and will shoot as good as any Anshultz.

JohnGalway
Mmmmmmm Cooper, "For the rimfire rifles (Model 57-M) chambered in either 22LR, 17 Mach 2, 22WMR, or 17HMR we offer The LVT, The Classic, The Custom Classic, or The Western Classic." Or you could look at a Thompson or Henry repeating, they're definately different

trevor
Trevor thats a nice hmr do you mind me asking what the trigger is like on it what weight does it brake at and is there much creep? i can not say enought good things about this trigger it is so safe it is the accutrigger there is no creep once the first blade is pulled it unblocks the sear and allows it to be fired it can be adjusted from 2-6 lbs and u can do this your self no gunsmith as long as that front blade is not pulled the gun will not go off .on centrefire rifles pull is from 1-12 to 6 lbs. casts_by_fly
davmau, I have the savage stainless synthetic sporter weight model without the accutrigger (albeit it is still in the states). I like mine quite a lot. Though it is a more budget model (as compared to Cooper or Annie), it shoots very well for me. I have tried all of the different ammo available in the states that I could get(everything but S&B and FMJ CCI's) and it shoots them all pretty well. At 50 yd or less you can put as many shots as you want through a 5p piece and just keep making a ragged hole. When I shot it at 100 yd (a non measured 100 that turned out to be closer to 125) it was holding groups between 1" and 1.5", but a lot of the variation was the shifting 10 mph wind and my shooting position (prone on a bad hill). I've since learned more about the rifle's preferences and I firmly believe it will hold .75" groups or better at 100 yd. My gun doesn't like shooting off an attached bipod. I have a harris imitation that my .22 loves. The HMR tends to spray a little more with the bipod attached. Also, it doesn't do as well with free recoil as it does a firm hold into your shoulder. I suspect this is from the slightly heavier trigger pull of the non accutrigger model. My trigger could use some work, but I've not taken the time to do it. Mine came with a 3-9 bushnell that the original owner put on it. It was okay, but I prefer more magnification so I put a 5-15 Bushnell 3200 elite on it with the intention that I'd move it to a .223 when I got one. Not happening. This scope just fits this rifle and its range for me. If I had to do it all from scratch over again, I'd get the thumbhole laminate model with accutrigger as I love that stock (I'm going to get the Rem 700 .223 in it). Top it with the scope of your preference and enjoy. Thanks, Rick
