Fox 4 Falls

Out again tonight with the keeper, he called on Tuesday to say he wanted me there at 7.30pm to knock over a few rabbits and then try for another fox.

So turned up at the shoot hut and then loaded up in the landrover for a mooch around as the sun set. Lovely evening, not a cloud in the sky and no wind, perfect for the HMR.

Into the first field and we had the first rabbit in the bag soon after, we continued gently on taking the odd rabbit here and there and the HMR did not miss a beat, I then had a flyer. Rabbit at the base of a small bank of bear soil where the cattle had been messing about, about 70 yards away, lined him up and pulled the trigger and missed, puff of dust off to the left about 10†away from the rabbit, he sat up and look around while I worked the bolt and pop, down he went.

The sun then was down and the light started to go, we pulled up in a corner and sat for 20 mins chewing the fat and putting the world to rights as we munched on sausage rolls and a coffee.

Then off again, taking the odd rabbit still when a decent shot was found but mainly working the roof lamp looking for the tell tale eyes. Into one field and bingo, eyes at about 200 yards but for a safe shot we needed to get behind them and for the fox to move away from us. Little chance of that happening so we quietly moved away and planned to swing back around in 30 mins or so.

Into another field and as we dropped into the gateway we realised how much rain there had been last year, boggy and wet, I was leaning out the side window as the keeper gunned the engine to pull us though and I get a face full of liquid mud, thanks mate!

This field had a load of sheep in it, not good but there was a safe shot at a rabbit and they then all bunched up, ideal.

Worked around them and then on a far hedge something moved and we both said badger, movement was all wrong for fox. But he flicked the lamp off and we move at 45 degrees to the spot drawing closer, at 80 to 100 yards he flicked on the lamp and it was a fox. I already had the rifle out of the window ready and quickly lined up on the side for a engine room shot and bang, down she went.

A vixen cub, about half grown and not in 100% form.

We then took a long detour home hoping to see the other set of eyes again but nothing doing, one last field to look and rabbits galore. 4 quick shots from one point and the noise did not bother them at all, longest approx 110 yards. Annoying that we could only find 3 of them.

This is not all the rabbits as we used some to bait 3 fox traps but not a bad haul for the evening and very enjoyable

Well Done Jerry = your getting some good shooting in these last few weeks mate. :P

Thanks guys

Yep, have enjoyed every bit of it, and from tomorrow night I am on holiday for 2 weeks and all my guns are coming with us as I am looking after my parents farm while they get away. Plenty of shooting on the cards, rabbits, foxes and pigeon bashing planned.

:)

The only problem with lamping is I am on such a buz when I get home I struggle to sleep!

Your certainly putting that HMR to good use Jerry, well done mate.

The more I use it the more I love it!

Fatal for rabbits at a great range and does the job on Fox closer.

Nest 2 weeks are to be spent at my parents farm whilst they get away for a break so plenty of shooting to be had, it goes without saying my guns go with me!
