Foxing at prime time......dusk

I got out yesterday evening, first to zero the rifle as I had an unexplained miss recently and then if time allowed a sit up for foxy.

The rifle was way out - no wonder I missed - 3 inches to the right and three inches high ;)

Did a bit of scope fiddling and all sorted, as I now have a rifle that works I may as well sit up for a while.

A freshly cut wheat field was just the job, with a bench rest provided and great backstops all round, + I'd had a good result here 1 year earlier so hopes were high. Foxes have to cross a ditch to get into this field and it is easy to see their entry/exit routes so I plotted up accordingly.

First one caught me by surprise, out early at 20:25 about 130 yards away, no squeaks just watched in the bins and waited for it to settle, bang- thud, first one down. 2nd one I saw in thick cover sniffing the air - too much bracken for a sure shot though so a bit of patience on my part - it paid off 10 mins later out in front of me at 60 yards - slowly move the rifle (whilst watching I don't spook it) bang, thud number 2 down.

10 mins later I hear a rustling behind me, so I slowly shift to the other side of the bale and get it in the bins, it's moving away in a tractor track. No squeaking, just get the rifle on it and watch in the scope - it stops for a sniff 150 yards away, band, thud, third in the bag.

I saw another 4 but decided to leave those for another trip as the light was almost gone, I could see they were foxes in the bins but not well enough for a shot.

I great night.

Cheers

Unfortunately it's 90% bog!

Surely you jest John. its easily 99% bog and 1% rock around me, well with all the rain this summer anyway (silly me thinking global warming meant warmer summers, should have called it global drowning (much better marketing term))

Nice shooting OP. Flew into london recently and was surprised by all the golden fields around, England has much better land use than we do. Ireland is all just green. Not the best for shooting as the grass is just so bloody long most of the time

Well done andy 3 very nice foxes there :( I was out myself at dusk this evening but unfortunatly the fox seen me first and ran off  Are they lecia rangefinder binos on the bale beside the rifle?

Hi Tikkamark,

better luck next time, it happens to us all

The bins are regular Leicas (8x42 Trinovids) they are excellent BUT, an upgrade to the Leica Geovid rangefinders is a possibility if a can find a few hundred £'s spare. B)

+ thanks for all the comments guys

Happy Hunting

I had a bit better luck this evening nailed her :( So are the lecias that you currently have non-rangefinding binos? What do you think of them im seriously considering buying a lecia rangefinder but cant decide on the single handed ones or the binos id be more drawn to the single handed ones simply because they could fit into my pocket.
