boo
Hopefully a stick build , people can have a go , no fancy tools required, just basic , files ,rasps, saw, sanding paper, epoxy& a couple of stick making bits ! So planned and cut up a blank , marked the rough pattern of the cleek out, then cut it out on a band saw, a coping saw will also do ! Now rough the blank out with rasps & a power file is handy , slightly taper the nose down at the front, for an appealing look , leave the handle section square, next drilled an 8mm hole for the stainless stud , then you can decide if you want a square or tapered joint ! But drill the hole first....
boo
Choose a shank , this was a dark hazel , straightened , drilled & cut to accommodate the top , also needs a ferrule attaching
johnphilip
Looks good , just a question is it wide enough to get your hand inside the crook .
boo
Good question, watch it's a cleek for lambs not sheep , so a lot narrower ! Next pointing the top to the shank , both cut to the same angle but achieve a good fit, coloured chalk Mark's the high spots on the joint , used a Stanley blade bit at a time , dont go mad ! Till you get a neat fit...
boo
Top & shank joint near enough, time to glue up with epoxy , use a bike inner tube to pull everything up tight together and leave till gone off... Once glued up , mark up with a pencil , the continuation of the shank on the top , gives a guide to file to , take the handle down to a square , checking for straighteners on the back edge & general looks ! Next knock all the corners off , keep going to nearly round ,then file and sand into shape ...
boo
So sanded into shape and fit , this wood is really hard ! This is were had a bit of a disaster , on removing the insulation tape , on the joint , also pulled the bark ! ****** ! Oh well decided to strip the shank , so this is as far as I've got today, all the tiny burrs & cracks , filled with epoxy & coffee powder , makes a brown filler, tomorrow hopefully sand everything back , put some colour into the wood , bring the burrs out then seal it , not sure to leave the shank pale or darken it up , will see, really not that hard to have a go , next one will be a full size crook in burr oak. Put a picture up when done.....

boo
Sanded and first coat of sealer , left the shank pale , should be sealed and finished in about a week now....
ditchman
very nice too......ever tempted to leave it unstained to allow the user to "wear" it in ?
boo
True , but it does make the wood pop! Think it would need some sort of sealing , another one for the loft...😂😂😂
ditchman
what about just oiling it a bit...then let the natural grease/oil in your skin do the rest..
boo
The next one will oil ! 😁 probably be a burr oak crook or nose out depending how it goes ...

team tractor
I started making a stick for my little girl , I think you’ve told me how to finish it now. When my local wood yard starts again I’ll be doing just this
