Jenvey`s of Grantham

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any history on this shop, they last traded at 34 ,Westgate which was latterly the premises of Philip Charity who passed away in 2018 .I visited the shop in the 90`s and it was very much an old style shop !

Thanks.

I live in Grantham. I have asked a few of the older guys if they remember Jenvey but unfortunately no one has ever heard of them.

Thankyou for that . They traded for a long time ,latterly at 34,Westgate up to 1928 .There are guns out there sold by them ,what I`ve seen are normal trade built .As this was the same address as Philip Charity`s Gunshop ,I just wondered if he took over the business at some point in time ! Its amazing how long established gunshops disappear almost without trace but it is an oft repeated story sadly.

hello, try on google, some info on Lincolnshire Life

Thanks, I`d already tried that ,after seeing a Jenvey gun for sale ,that threw up the connection to Charity`s Gunshop address which peeked my interest having been in the shop over 20 yr ago when it was more of a general sports emporium although it had the trappings of its perhaps previous existence ,if you know what I mean !!

Did anyone deal with Philip Charity perhaps?

There was once quite a few gun/sports shops and ironmongers close to where I live, I've been trying to research a few for my cartridge collection but have found the same lack of information as you.

Been to the town library and found next to nothing. Really is a shame how these places have gone from living and written memory.

Good luck with your search 👍

I did find someone asking about them in relation to cartridge collecting ,so I assume there are some cartridges extant!

You`re right about losing knowledge about these companies but generally we`re all forgotten after 2 generations .....

Thanks for your interest.

There is a Jenvey 28g hammer gun for sale on Vintage guns.

That`s the one that set me off into research mode ,lol! Thanks for the info though. There are pics of the locks off a Jenvey & Tite hammergun on the net too.

I`ve also found reference to a Kate Jenvey of Newark who married one George Tite of Northampton in 1901. Not far from Grantham and two fairly unusual surnames. Coincidence possible I suppose .Kate died in 1956,leaving two brothers-William Jenvey in Vancouver and Charles Jenvey from Nottingham.

It all happened a century ago or more ,so may just be lost in time by the look of it.

Perhaps they were Ironmongers or centered on another business and guns & cartridges were a sideline,as was often the case??

I have just bought a hammer gun and from research an awful lot of ironmonger had guns made with their names on the locks and ribs but the actual gun could be from any number of makers.

Did you have any dealings with Philip Charity when he was trading?

He must have drifted away from the trade somehow considering it was titled` Gunshop`. Thanks for that tho`,it gives some perspective!

Was there another gunsmiths in Grantham that had a better business going?

Almost certainly Birmingham made. Very few guns were ever made by the name engraved on them. Even the big names farmed the work out

I've got a few ads that I've got hold of from old magazine's and papers to frame up when I have the space, nothing from round my way though unfortunately.

There was another gunshop. I use the term loosley as I can't remember the name but a really old guy who wouldn't sell any of the guns he had in the shop. I joke not. If he liked the look of you he might sell you some carts or a cleaning kit but none of the guns had prices on and when you asked how much he used to say it's not for sale 😂
