It’s what you make it really, but I can see your point, from the perspective of being locked down in Saudi. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It's interesting that the most successful countries seem to have gone about getting on top of the virus by treating the problem as a series of separate discrete localized outbreaks rather than as one large interconnected national infection. So, for example, somewhere like Barrow in Furness might get locked down whilst other places might suffer no restrictions at all. And then, during lockdown, within Barrrow in Furness all kinds of resources would be concentrated to track, trace, and isolate cases and potential spreaders. Of course, there is a degree of national interconnection, but nevertheless it seems that the bite-sized section approach is better than trying to do the whole jigsaw randomly. And life can go on in lots of areas almost normally. But then that approach requires both trust and authority to be delegated to local level - something that has pretty much been anathema to the Tories since Thatcher's day. But perhaps even at this late stage it's worth a try.

I can live with my own company and I've got a few active personal projects on the go so the time's not being wholly wasted. And sooner or later we'll hopefully get out of here so it's not the end of the world. I'd like to at least see my family this year though. That's the only real kicker. The rest of it I can just log down as being one of life's more unusual experiences. It's like doing a Buddhist retreat .....

A local acquaintance who works in the NHS ( he’s quite high up but can’t recall in what role ) says it’s a bit of a mystery why Barrow has been hit hard, and Cumbria in general really, given its rural expanses. No doubt all may be revealed one day.

Like I said I don't know anyone who has been directly affected, a few lads mentioned they knew one person who had died in early April, a few people who had to self isolate. But according to the local nhs trust they were testing earlier than others and have done more testing, yet I missed two weeks work but have been back in since and haven't heard of a case that any of the lads know of. As to why Cumbria, possibly because they get a lot of tourists? 2 hours ago, Retsdon said: course, there is a degree of national interconnection, but nevertheless it seems that the bite-sized section approach is better than trying to do the whole jigsaw randomly.
