Dave-G
I've a few of these in the borders and usually squash them thinking they were wire worm, but a quick google suggests they are centipedes and good. Thoughts from those who know please.
steve_b_wales
Wireworms have no 'legs' sticking out. I would say that it looks more like a centipede. It's difficult to tell if could be a millipede which has two sets of legs per segment. Edited August 22, 2020 by steve_b_wales

We live and learn Ditto - father had me squash them as a kid over 60 years ago as he dug over a grassy apple orchard to plant spuds. The brute used a plough strapped to his shoulders after the digging. I had to dig it myself the following time.

Thanks everyone, they are certainly very lively and one needs to be quick to grab it if there is loose soil for it to wriggle under. Many a time I've dropped one and not been able to scrabble the soil quick enough to find it, seemingly good that I didn't after the responses I've had on here.
