dad
i have a local heron that often stands on the river bank opposite my garden waiting to pounce on anything within reach, twice this week i watched him launch himself 3 mtr out into the river head first to catch a passing surface fish which he caught, with the rest of his body floundering on the surface and with great effort getting airborn again and back to the bank with wings outstretched to dry. And start watching again.
sam triple
Just the kind of thing you can watch for hours without even realising it
MirokuMK70
On a similar note, both myself and my mate caught a signal crayfish on lures on friday night. They caught them in a pincer as they went past and held on tight. A first for me I always thought they were scavengers not active hunters... fse10
we have one on my club lake that flies along like a pelican and scoops the fish up.
ShootingEgg
We have a heronry (spelling) about 5 minutes from my house. Really should go and get some photos at some point
MirokuMK70
Herons are very efficient predators, not just of fish, but birds mammals amphibians and reptiles- they will eat just about anything they can fit down their beaks. Which is a lot.
washerboy
I've had young herons beg for fish, one last summer kept walking up and down the bank behind me within inches as I was lure fishing. It was stood watching me retrieve small perch and edged closer every time I cast out
