what cartridge for game?

Recommended Posts

Eley Realtree 30g 6 1/2's work well on rough game (rabbits, pigeons etc) but I have a big problem with them being almost invisible when the Urika's ejected them. I spend more time looking for the empty than getting set up for the shot.

Lyvale Express 32g 6s get my vote too. Superb cartridge.

Starlight,

If they work for you then fine, last night I watched 2 barrels of steel from a 23/4" gun hit tow geese and all it did was make a fluttering noise and ruffle the feathers.

My philosophy to shooting especially geese is "Hit them hard with something big". I know that hevi shot are a quid a go, I have got 40 in the garage at the moment. But to be honest how many are you likely to use throughout a season?

And surely a goose or two in the freezer is worth it, My mate Chris who I was with last night would agree with me. He was using 2 3/4" steel cartidges in 3's and I was using 31/2" nitro steel in 2's. The score at the end of flight was 3-0 to me.

He is now on the lookout for an Extrema or similar.

Bit late perhaps, but I'll echo MC on this one. Remington Nitro-Steel in BB's for geese and 4's for Duck. Other steel is too risky/ineffective and other non-toxic's are too damn expensicve in comparison.

Game use Eley VIP 30 or 32 gram in 6's. Fantastic.

For pigeon/rough shooting use Eley HB pigeon in 32gm 6's again fantastic.

The best thing is though if you are new to it all, see what your friend use or by a box (25 not 250) of each type you fancy and give then ago. You should find something that suits both you and the gun in terms of Recoil and kills. Once you do stick with it.

One last thing, when using Steel make sure you use the widest choke possible as unlike lead and non-toxic steel doesn't compress in restricted barrels and will blow the end of your gun off if using tight chokes.
