The inbred cynicism kicked in earlier.

Back then, a short blast on the blues and twos to get everyone's attention before the police car pulled into our cul-de-sac and onto my drive one Sunday lunchtime so most folk were at home.

"Sir, we've come to check your firearm storage."

"No you haven't."

"Yes, because of your application."

"I see that you have a copy with you which no doubt you've read. Does this RAF married quarter look anything line the station armoury at RAF ********? On your way out could you do the noise and lights bit again as you have everyone's attention and the kids love it."

Having lunch today when the wife who was sitting facing the dining room window said that a police car has just backed into our drive. Job now done but have to make excuse and then leave.

"Hello, what can I do for you?" Having got to the door before plod could ring the bell.

"Aren't you expecting me?"

"Err, no."

Wife arrives.

"Someone gave me this address", pointing to the text on his phone."

Beady eyed wife remarks that below the address is listed my husbands guns.

"Don't worry about that, that automatically appears with an address where there's guns. Obviously there's been a mistake. I'm sorry to have disturbed you."

We have a neighbour who will want to know all about this so I will oblige him and consequently all the others will also know within 24 hours.

Back along cert' holders or applicants were getting police visits which didn't make too much sense. The consensus of opinion in the areas affected was that although not rife, it was too frequent to be an error. Sunday lunch times seemed to be a favourite. A sort of predecessor to the planned unannounced visits introduced following one particular firearms incident. This was at the time when there was a dramatic increase in shooting sports and I became aware of several such incidents which were thought to be a disguised, 'do you really want the hassle of having a certificate'.

At the time I was living in Norfolk.
