Home made targets

Recommended Posts

Over the years, I, like many other's, have made various targets to use when shooting on the farm. I've made 'plaster' ones, by mixing plaster and putting into moulds, usually jar lids etc. I also came across a good idea a few years ago, which was fitting car tyre valves through plastic pop bottles and then inflating them. Shooting with a rimfire or even an air rifle, makes them 'explode'.

I used to have a "battle" in the early 1970s with my oldest playmate in the side garden. We'd each set up our army of plastic soldiers (the ones that came in a plastic bag one set grey one set green and were made by Louis Marx). Then we'd swap positions and stand three yards back I'd try and shoot all his and he mine. First one to kill the other's army was the winner. We both had BSA Airsporters with iron sights but mine being my father's Mk I had the advantage of self-opening tap.

Check you local stores after Halloween.  Walmart over here sells colored hair spray for $1usd a can during Halloween.  Well the day after the holiday it is on sale for 50-75% off.  I got 4000 cans for just over a grand.  When you shoot them they puff the color like spray paint.  Add some burning candles the will throw a little mushroom cloud of fire. I buy the store out every Halloween.  If you wait for them to auction the pallets off you can get it cheaper.
